14 claims: 4 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus including an active modulated scattering probe array (16) of probes, the apparatus comprising:a circuit board structure (70) having a plurality of layers, wherein said plurality of layers include alternating planar layers of electrical conductors (72) and at least one dielectric (71);wherein each of the probes comprises a first plurality of probe antenna elements (19) disposed with a first common orientation in a first array in a first one of said plurality of layers;a first plurality of impedances (55);and an electrical signal modulation device (17) connected among said first plurality of probe antenna elements and connected among said first plurality of electrical impedances;characterized in that : said electrical signal modulation device of each probe is disposed in a second one of said plurality of layers;and said first plurality of electrical impedances of each probe is disposed in said second one of said plurality of layers.
  2. 4
A method for operating an active modulated scattering probe array (16) of probes, the method comprising:providing a circuit board structure (70) having the probes and a plurality of layers, wherein said plurality of layers include alternating planar layers of electrical conductors (72) and at least one dielectric (71), wherein each of the probes comprises a first plurality of probe antenna elements (19) disposed with a first common orientation in a first array in a first one of said plurality of layers;a first plurality of electrical impedances (55);and an electrical signal modulation device (17) connected among said first plurality of probe antenna elements and connected among said first plurality of electrical impedances, characterized in that : said electrical signal modulation device of each probe is disposed in a second one of said plurality of layers;and said first plurality of electrical impedances of each probe is disposed in said second one of said plurality of layers.
  3. 13
The apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 3, 5 to 8, 11, 12, wherein the apparatus is an over-the-air system for testing an antenna of an extremely high frequency wireless communication device in the near-field region.
  4. 14
The apparatus or method of any preceding claim, wherein said second one of said plurality of layers further comprises control lines that feed a modulation signal to the electrical signal modulation device (17), wherein the control lines feed the modulation signal to the electrical signal modulation device via the electrical impedances (55).
