15 claims: 8 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for cleaning the inner surface of a pipeline (122) from deposits and for forming a protective coating, comprising:a cleaning tool (250) which is configured to be caused to move in the interior of the pipeline by a flow of a fluid (126), the cleaning tool comprising a plurality of guide discs (18, 20) engaging the pipeline surface and mounted along a longitudinal axis of the cleaning tool;an anode (130) positioned inside the cleaning tool;an impressed current source (140) configured to electrically connect to the anode and the interior of the pipeline, the interior of the pipeline configured to act as a cathode when current is applied from the current source so that ions flow from the anode, through the fluid, to the interior of the pipeline;and an encapsulant (134) encapsulating the anode, wherein the encapsulant comprises a hydrophilic wax repellant cementitious material that is sufficiently porous to allow ions to pass therethrough.
  2. 3
The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the anode (130) comprises a material selected from a group consisting of mixed metal oxide, "MMO", platinized niobium, "PtNb", and platinized titanium, "PtTi".
  3. 4
The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the cleaning tool (250) is a pipeline pig.
  4. 5
The apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the cleaning tool (250) further comprises a support member (28) engaging the inner surface of the pipeline (122).
  5. 8
A method (500) for cleaning the inner surface of a pipeline (122) from deposits and for forming a protective coating, the method comprising:causing a cleaning tool (250) to move in the interior of the pipeline by a flow of a fluid, the cleaning tool comprising a plurality of guide discs (18,20) engaging the pipeline surface and mounted along a longitudinal axis of the cleaning tool;encapsulating an anode (130) with an encapsulant (134), wherein the encapsulant comprises a hydrophilic wax repellant cementitious material that is sufficiently porous to allow ions to pass therethrough;attaching the anode to the cleaning tool;connecting an impressed current source (140) to the anode and the interior of the pipeline;and applying current from the current source to the anode and the interior of the pipeline, the interior of the pipeline acting as a cathode when current is applied from the current source so that ions flow from the anode, through the fluid, to the interior of the pipeline.
  6. 10
The method according to any of claims 8-9, further comprising:installing a battery device (140) on the cleaning tool as the impressed current source.
  7. 11
The method according to any of claims 8-10, wherein the anode (130) comprises a material selected from a group consisting of mixed metal oxide, "MMO", platinized niobium, "PtNb", and platinized titanium, "PtTi".
  8. 12
The method according to any of claims 8-11, further comprising:selecting an anode size to provide a predetermined amount of cathodic protection at a predetermined voltage, based on the fluid properties and conditions expected in the pipeline (122), the size of the pipeline, and the number of anodes (130) to be used.
