Scalability of providing packet flow management

Abstract

Systems and methods for managing packet flows in a communication network are provided. Packet information can be cached on different levels and used to avoid external queries. The cache information can also be correlated with other types of information, such as location information, to be able to serve that information quicker than if one or more external queries were to be made. A demux manager can provide routing and session setup, by routing packets that already have a session to the session manager and assigning packets to a session manager if they are not already assigned to a session. The tiered architecture also provides scalability to many users and minimizes delays even during high call volumes because the load can be distributed well across the gateway's resources.

12 claims: 7 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method comprising:receiving (610) a packet at a gateway;determining (622) if the packet matches a limited set of criteria and, if there is a match, forwarding (624) the packet to a corresponding process instance, otherwise forwarding to a demux manager (352, 516);analyzing (612) the packet at the demux manager to determine whether to assign a new process instance to handle a new packet flow and determining how to route the packet;andreceiving a new packet at a process instance that is assigned from the demux manager and creating (614) a cache entry with information from the new packet.
  2. 7
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the process instance to handle the new packet flow at the demux manager is selected from a set of process instances, and wherein the method further comprises dynamically adding a new process instance to the set of process instances based on availability and load of the process instances in the set of process instances.
  3. 8
The method of any preceding claim, further comprising directing (616) the new packet from the process instance to a next destination.
  4. 9
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the determining if the packet matches a limited set of criteria is performed at a network processing unit (320) of the gateway.
  5. 10
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the determining if the packet matches a limited set of criteria is performed using a hash list.
  6. 11
Apparatus arranged to perform the method of any preceding claim.
  7. 12
A storage medium that is readable by a general or special purpose-processing unit, the storage medium comprising instructions which, when executed by the general or special purpose-processing unit, cause the general or special purpose-processing unit to perform the method of any of claims 1 to 10.
