A method for programming a plurality of non-volatile analog neuromorphic memory cells (10) based on a programming speed characteristic of the cell comprising:determining the programming speed characteristic of a neuromorphic memory cell;if the programming speed characteristic of the cell is identified as being fast, performing a first programming tuning algorithm on the cell comprising: adding a first amount of charge to a floating gate of the cell during a programming operation (4303);verifying the charge level on the floating gate of the cell (4304, 4305);and repeating the adding and verifying steps until a desired charge level on the floating gate of the cell is achieved (4306);and if the programming speed characteristic of the cell is identified as being slow, performing a second programming tuning algorithm on the cell comprising: adding a second amount of charge less than the first amount of charge to a floating gate of the cell during a programming operation (4308);verifying the charge level on the floating gate of the cell (4309, 4310);and repeating the adding and verifying steps until the desired charge level on the floating gate of the cell is achieved (4311).
