  1. 1
A self-powered lock, comprising:a lock operable by a motor (228);a manually operable electricity generator (16) generating electricity upon manual actuation by a user, the electricity being used to supply power input to a controller (216);and an electricity storage device (226, 232) storing electricity generated by the electricity generator (16), wherein at least a portion of the electricity stored by the electricity storage device (226, 232) is used when the lock is operated, wherein the electricity storage device (226, 232) is configured to store an unused portion of electricity after the lock is operated, the unused portion of electricity usable for a subsequent lock operation to supply power input to the controller (216), characterized in that the electricity storage device comprises primary and auxiliary capacitor banks (226, 232), at least a portion of the electricity stored in the primary and/or auxiliary capacitor banks (226, 232) being used when the lock is operated, wherein the auxiliary capacitor bank (232) is precharged with excess charge from the primary capacitor bank (226), the excess charge being an unused portion of electricity after the lock is operated, and the excess charge in the auxiliary capacitor bank (232) is usable for a subsequent lock operation to supply power input to the controller (216).
  2. 7
A method of powering a lock having a manually operable electricity generator (16) electrically connected to a motor (228), the method comprising:generating electricity upon manual actuation of the electricity generator (16) by a user;supplying electricity generated by the electricity generator (16) to a controller (216), the controller (216) supplying electricity to the motor (228) for operating the lock;and storing an unused portion of the electricity generated (16) by the electricity generator in an electricity storage device (226, 232) after the lock is operated, the unused portion of electricity usable for a subsequent lock operation to supply power input to the controller (216), characterized in that the electricity storage devices comprises primary and auxiliary capacity banks (226, 232), and the method further comprises precharging the auxiliary capacitor bank (232) with excess charge from the primary capacitor bank (226), and using excess charge in the auxiliary capacitor bank (232) for a subsequent lock operation to supply power input to the controller (216).
