8 claims: 3 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method for reducing x-ray tomosynthesis image reconstruction artifacts, the method comprising:acquiring a plurality of projection images detected by an x-ray detector (102);reconstructing a plurality of tomosynthesis image slices from the plurality of projection images;forming a binary mask image, to isolate regions with no anatomic information, based on non-anatomic regions remaining on a list of verified non-anatomic pixel coordinates of an orthogonal projection image that have a low pixel variance and a high pixel value, wherein the binary mask image has the same dimensions as the orthogonal image and is formed based on verified non-anatomical pixel coordinates, wherein the orthogonal direction is defined as being perpendicular to the x-ray detector;isolating regions of the plurality of tomographic image slices using the binary mask resulting in isolated nonanatomic regions;and compressing pixel values in the said isolated non-anatomic regions of the plurality of tomographic images through an intensity transformation into different output pixels to generate reduced-artifact tomographic images.
  2. 7
A system (100) for reducing x-ray tomosynthesis image reconstruction artifacts, the system comprising:a memory which stores a control program;and a processor (222) adapted to operate under control of the control program to carry out the method steps as defined in any one of the preceding claims.
  3. 8
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium which stores a control program which, when executed by a computer-implemented tomosynthesis system (100), causes the same to perform the method steps as defined in any of clams 1 to 6.
