Modular lighting systems

Abstract

In embodiments of the present invention, a method and system is provided for designing improved intelligent, LED-based lighting systems. The LED based lighting systems may include fixtures with one or more of rotatable LED light bars, integrated sensors, onboard intelligence to receive signals from the LED light bars and control the LED light bars, and a mesh network connectivity to other fixtures.

  1. 1
A method of commissioning a first light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture in a network of LED lighting fixtures, the first LED lighting fixture comprising a power management unit and a nonvolatile memory, the method comprising:A) storing identifying information about the first LED lighting fixture in the nonvolatile memory;B) powering the first LED lighting fixture with the power management unit;C) transmitting the identifying information about the first LED lighting fixture from the power management unit to at least one of a handheld commissioning tool and at least one second LED lighting fixture in the network of LED lighting fixtures;D) reporting the identifying information to a central management module communicatively coupled to the network of LED lighting fixtures;E) generating a representation of the network of LED lighting fixtures based at least in part on the identifying information reported to the central management module;and F) generating at least one rule based on the representation of the network of LED lighting fixtures generated in E), the at least one rule corresponding to at least one condition of an environment illuminated by the network of LED lighting fixtures.
  2. 9
A first light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture in a network of LED lighting fixtures, the first LED lighting fixture comprising:at least one LED to illuminate an environment;a nonvolatile memory to store identifying information about the first LED lighting fixture;and a power management unit (PMU) to power the at least one LED and to transmit the identifying information about the first LED lighting fixture to at least one of a handheld commissioning tool and at least one second LED lighting fixture in the network of LED lighting fixtures, wherein the at least one of the handheld commissioning tool and the at least one second LED lighting fixture report the identifying information to a central management module that generates a representation of the network of LED lighting fixtures based at least in part on the identifying information, and the central management module generates at least one rule based on the representation of the network of LED lighting fixtures, the at least one rule corresponding to at least one condition of an environment illuminated by the network of LED lighting fixtures.
  3. 10
A network to provide lighting to an environment, the network comprising:A) at least one first LED lighting fixture comprising: A1) at least one LED to emit light into the environment;A2) a nonvolatile memory to store identifying information about the first LED lighting fixture;A3) a power management unit (PMU) configured to power the at least one LED and to transmit the identifying information about the at least one first LED lighting fixture from the power management unit to at least one of a handheld commissioning tool and at least one second LED lighting fixture in the network;and B) a central management module configured to: B1) receive the identifying information from the at least one of the handheld commissioning tool and the at least one second LED lighting fixture;B2) generate a representation of the network based at least in part on the identifying information;and B3) generate at least one rule based on the representation of the network of LED lighting fixtures generated in B2), the at least one rule corresponding to at least one condition of an environment illuminated by the network of LED lighting fixtures.
