Methods and apparatus for dynamic network evaluation and network selection

Abstract

Methods, apparatus, systems and articles of manufacture are disclosed to evaluate and select networks for transmission of messages from aircraft. An example apparatus (106) includes a message analyzer (304) to determine, based on a message type, an allowable delay associated with a first message to be transmitted during a flight. The apparatus (106) includes a mapping data analyzer (312) to generate, based on network map data collected during a prior flight, a forecast of network availability associated with a transmission of the first message, and a target network determiner (314) to determine, based on the forecast of network availability, a target network for transmission of the first message, where the target network has a predicted availability at a time during the current flight within the allowable delay. The apparatus (106) includes a message outputter (322) to output, prior to the allowable delay, in response to the target network being available, the first message via the target network.

  1. 1
An apparatus (106) for managing aircraft messages, the apparatus (106) comprising:a message analyzer (304) to determine, based on a message type, an allowable delay associated with a first message to be transmitted during a current flight;a mapping data analyzer (312) to generate, based on network map data collected during a prior flight, a forecast of network availability associated with a transmission of the first message;a target network determiner (314) to determine, based on the forecast of network availability, a target network for the transmission of the first message, the target network having a predicted availability at a time during the current flight within the allowable delay;and a message outputter (322) to output, prior to the allowable delay, in response to the target network being available, the first message via the target network.
  2. 4
The apparatus (106) of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the forecast of network availability includes a forecast of network traffic.
  3. 5
The apparatus (106) of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the forecast of network availability is based on a flight path for an aircraft.
  4. 6
The apparatus (106) of any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the target network is determined based on a security requirement for the first message, the target network being the lowest cost network meeting the security requirement.
  5. 7
The apparatus (106) of any of claims 1 to 6, further including a network communicator (318) to determine an availability of a network, the network communicator (318) to additionally transmit the availability of the network to an apparatus (112) for mapping network availability.
  6. 8
The apparatus (106) of any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the forecast of network availability includes a probability that the target network will be available for transmission at a time prior to the allowable delay.
  7. 9
A non-transitory computer readable storage medium comprising computer readable instructions (400, 500, 600) that, when executed, is to cause a processor (1712) to at least:determine, using a processor (1712), based on a message type, an allowable delay associated with a first message to be transmitted during a current flight (404);generate, based on network map data collected during a prior flight, a forecast of network availability associated with a transmission of the first message (424);determine, based on the forecast of network availability, a target network for the transmission of the first message, the target network having a predicted availability at a time during the current flight within the allowable delay (404, 432, 436);and output, prior to the allowable delay, in response to the target network being available, the first message via the target network (448, 706).
  8. 12
The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of any of claims 9 to 11, wherein the target network is determined based on a security requirement for the first message, the target network being the lowest cost network meeting the security requirement (420).
  9. 13
The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of any of claims 9 to 12, wherein the instructions (400, 500, 600), when executed, further cause a processor (1712) to output the first message via a best available network in response to the allowable delay being reached and the target network not being available (436, 446, 448).
  10. 14
The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of any of claims 9 to 13, wherein the instructions (400, 500, 600), when executed, further cause a processor (1712) to determine an availability of a network and to transmit the availability of the network for mapping network availability (602).
  11. 15
The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of any of claims 9 to 14, wherein the forecast of network availability is based on a flight path for an aircraft (424).
