System for providing visual guidance for steering a tip of an endoscopic device towards one or more landmarks and assisting an operator in endoscopic navigation

Abstract

Landmark directional guidance is provided to an operator of an endoscopic device by displaying graphical representations of vectors adjacent a current image captured by an image capturing device disposed at a tip of the endoscopic device and being displayed at the time on a display screen, wherein the graphical representations of the vectors point in directions that the endoscope tip is to be steered in order to move towards associated landmarks such as anatomic structures. Navigation guidance is provided to the operator by determining a current position and shape of the endoscope relative to a reference frame, generating an endoscope computer model according to the determined position and shape, and displaying the endoscope computer model along with a patient computer model referenced to the reference frame so as to be viewable by the operator while steering the endoscope.

  1. 1
A system comprising:a steerable instrument and a processor configured to receive a first landmark establishment request from an operator input device while a reference portion of the steerable instrument is located at a first anatomic landmark;responsive to receiving the first landmark establishment request, record information about the reference portion of the steerable instrument located at the first anatomic landmark;reference the recorded information as first landmark information;register the first landmark information to a model of a patient anatomy;and provide guidance for navigating the steerable instrument along a path through a plurality of anatomic landmarks, including the first anatomic landmark, to a target location.
  2. 10
A system comprising:a steerable instrument and a processor configured to receive a first landmark establishment request from an operator input device while a reference portion of the steerable instrument is located at a first anatomic landmark;responsive to receipt of the first landmark establishment request, record first information about the reference portion of the steerable instrument located at the first anatomic landmark;reference the recorded first information as first landmark information, the recorded first information including position information for the reference portion located at the first anatomic landmark and including an image captured by the steerable instrument while the reference portion is located at the first anatomic landmark;receive a second landmark establishment request from the operator input device while the reference portion of the steerable instrument is located at a second anatomic landmark;responsive to receipt of the second landmark establishment request, record second information about the reference portion of the steerable instrument located at the second anatomic landmark;reference the recorded second information as second landmark information, the recorded second information including position information for the reference portion located at the second anatomic landmark and including an image captured by the steerable instrument while the reference portion is located at the second anatomic landmark;and provide guidance for navigating a guided instrument along a path through the first and second anatomic landmarks.
