However, such remote sign-in scenarios may be subject to phi shing attacks on a one-time token/approval of the secondary previously provisioned entity. In these cases, a user intending to authenticate remotely can be tricked into authenticating an attacker' s authentication request by authenticating an attacker' s with the user's secondary entity.

BRIEF SUMMARY

0009[0005] One embodiment illustrated herein includes a method that may be practiced in a computing environment. The method includes acts for authenticating a secure session between a first user entity and an identity provider using a second user entity. The method receiving a request for a session from an entity that purports to be the first user entity. The method further includes sending authentication context from the request, and wherein the authentication context for the request arrives at the second user entity. The method further includes receiving an indication that the authentication context has been verified. As a result, the method further includes authenticating a secure session between a first user entity and an identity provider or approving a secure transaction. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

0023[0019] Some embodiments herein can thwart a man in the middle attack in a remote sign-in scenario by an identity provider (e.g., at a server) providing a user (or a user's device) with authentication context. For example, in one embodiment, an existing channel between an identity provider and a secondary entity can be used to provide authentication context, with respect to an authentication request to the server from a primary entity. In doing so, the identity provider could show possible discrepancies between the primary entity and the identity provider to the user in an effort to help prevent phishing in remote authentication requests. The user in these cases could be shown observations the login identity provider sees, such as the primary entity's location, the type of device of the primary entity, the type of authentication scenario, etc. The secondary entity, in this case, is used as a means of communication to the user should the primary entity be compromised. In these cases, the channel with the secondary entity would allow the identity provider to communicate to the user a message that cannot be modified by an attacker that has compromised the primary entity. In particular, the identity provider may be able to detect a modification by comparing authentication context from the primary entity and authentication context approved at the secondary entity.

0024[0020] With reference now to Figure 1, an example is illustrated. In Figure 1, a user 102 initiates a device-to-device sign-in flow on a primary entity 104 (e.g., a device such as a computer, phone, etc., or an application) where there could potentially be a man-in-the- middle attacker 106. An authentication stack on the primary entity 104 makes a request 108 to an identity provider 110 (e.g., a service at a server) to initialize a login. The authentication stack at the primary entity 104 receives a nonce 112 and authentication context 114 (which may be, for example, a location) both of which are passed to a secondary entity 1 16 (e.g., a device, such as smart phone) for the secondary entity 116 to sign. On the secondary entity 116, the user is presented with the authentication context 114 (e.g., the location is displayed on the secondary entity 116 to the user), sees that the authentication context 1 14 is valid, and unlocks a local credential with a local gesture on the secondary entity 116. For example, the user 102 could select a button in a user interface of the secondary entity 116 indicating that a location displayed is indeed the physical location of the primary entity 104. The secondary entity 116 signs the nonce 1 12 and authentication context 1 14, sends the resulting token 118 to the primary entity 104 for the primary entity to use as a credential to authenticate to the identity provider 110. The identity provider 110 verifies that the location in the signed token 118 is the same location as the primary entity 104. A man-in-the-middle attacker 106 is able to access the token 118, but is unable to play it from a different location.

In this example, the user 102 initializes a remote sign-in session on a web browser 120 with the identity provider 1 10 by sending a remote authentication request 108 to sign in with the user' s trusted secondary entity 116. The identity provider 120 causes the web browser 120 to display a QR code 122 with a session identifier and location embedded in the data of the QR code 122 for the secondary entity 1 16 to approve. On the secondary entity 1 16, the user 102 scans the QR code 122 and is presented with an option, such as an option on the screen of the secondary entity 116, to approve the remote sign-in based on location information embedded as authentication context in the QR code 122 so as to approve of the remote authentication request 108. The user 102 verifies that the location is appropriate (e.g., that the user is using the primary entity 104 in the location indicated in the authentication context) and enters their local credential 124 and local gesture at the secondary entity 116 to approve the remote authentication request 108 attesting that it came from the user 102. The secondary entity 116 then presents the local credential 124, along with a location 114 to the identity provider 1 10 to authenticate the remote authentication request 108. The identity provider 110 compares the location of the remote authentication request 108 with the location provided by the secondary entity 1 16 to ensure it matches with the user- approved location provided by the secondary entity. The identity provider 1 10 is then able to authenticate a remote session.

0027[0023] The location in this case helps to prevent a man-in-the-middle attack between the browser 120 and the identity provider 1 10. Should a man-in-the-middle attack occur in this scenario and the user 102 is presented with the attacker's QR code, the user 102 would be able to deny the authentication request as the location would not match what is expected. A more sophisticated attacker may attempt to change the location presented in the QR code - that is, modify the QR code to contain the user's actual location and the attacker's session identifier. The identity provider 110 in this case would prevent the authentication request as the attacker's location would be different than the location 1 14 approved by the trusted secondary entity 1 16.

0028[0024] Referring now to Figure 3, another example is illustrated. In this example, a user attempts initialize a remote connect session where a man-in-the-middle attacker intercepts a remote authentication request 108 from the primary entity 104. The man-in- the-middle attacker 106 uses a session identifier from the remote authentication request 108 to create a nefarious remote authentication request 108'. Using the nefarious remote authentication request 108', a remote connect session is created for the attacker 106. The user 102 at the primary entity is presented with the attacker's session identifier 126 for the Remote Connect request. The user 102, unaware, proceeds to a web page 120 to sign-in to the remote authentication session on a trusted secondary entity 116, and enters the attackers session identifier 126 to complete the flow. The flow looks to be secure to the user since the site is using SSL; however, the user enters their username and password (or local credential), and is presented with the location 126 of the session. The user 102 sees that the location differs from what is expected, and denies the session.

Upon clicking buy in the app store 128, the malware 130 runs and attempts to trick the user 102 into purchasing a malicious app. The user enters a password into the app store 128 as part of the purchase process, and is sent a notification 132 from the identity provider 1 10 to the secondary entity 1 16 requesting approval to purchase the app. The secondary entity 116 displays to the user 102 that the app that the user is purchasing a malicious app, and allows the user 102 to then deny the purchase using the secondary entity 116. In this scenario, the malware 130 is unable to modify the notification 132 sent to the trusted secondary entity 1 16. In this manner, the user 102 can be safely notified, and asked to approve the application that is being purchased.

This can be accomplished in a number of different fashions. However, if malicious software is installed on the primary entity 104, the malicious software may spoof an IP address for a nefarious entity and display the spoofed IP address at the primary entity 104. Thus, in an alternative more secure example, the primary entity 104 may communicate with the secondary entity 1 16, and as a part of their communication, provide the IP address of the primary entity 104 to the secondary entity 1 16. The secondary entity 1 16 could then display the IP address sent as an IP address from the primary entity 104 along with the IP address contained in the authentication context to a user. The user could then compare the information displayed on the secondary entity 1 16 to determine if the IP address of the primary entity 104 matches the IP address contained in the authentication context.

In an alternative or additional embodiment, a password, biometric identification, one time code, or other credential may be entered at the secondary entity 1 16 and returned to the identity provider 110. The authentication can be verified at the identity provider 110. In any of the illustrated examples, the identity provider 1 10 can then provide the appropriate tokens to the primary entity 104, if all verifications are passed, as illustrated at 707 so that the primary entity 104 can participate in a secure connection with the identity provider 1 10.

0044[0040] Referring now to Figure 8, yet another example embodiment is illustrated. In this example, the primary entity 104 sends a request to the identity provider 110 as illustrated at 801. In this particular example, the secondary entity 116 may have been pre- registered with the identity provider 1 10 to receive alerts when various actions are performed between at the primary entity 104 and the identity provider 1 10. Thus, in this example the authentication context and nonce are automatically sent to the secondary entity 116 as illustrated at 802 and 803 as a result of the secondary entity 1 16 being pre- registered with the identity provider 110 to receive notifications when the primary entity 104 attempts to request a secure connection with the identity provider 1 10. Once the secondary entity 116 receives the nonce and authentication context, the secondary entity 116 can perform various verification actions as illustrated above (and in further examples below) to verify the authentication context. Once the authentication context is verified, the authentication context and the nonce can be signed by the secondary entity 116 and the signed authenticated context and nonce can be sent to the identity provider 110 as illustrated at 804. The identity provider 110 could verify the signature using standard cryptographic techniques. Additionally or alternatively, the identity provider 110 may verify that authentication context sent from the identity provider at 802 matches the authentication context received back at the identity provider 1 10 at 804. In an alternative or additional embodiment, a password, biometric identification, one time code, or other credential may be entered at the secondary entity 1 16 and returned to the identity provider 110. The authentication can be verified at the identity provider 110. In any of the illustrated examples, the identity provider 1 10 will then provide the appropriate tokens to the primary entity 104 as illustrated at 805 to allow the primary entity 104 to participate in a secure connection with the identity provider 110. Embodiments can also be used to protect a second authentication factor. For example, in Figure 8, the initial request illustrated at 801 could include a first credential (which a man-in-the-middle attacker could intercept). However, if establishing a session requires two credentials, the authentication context could be a second credential that could be protected in the way described above.

0045[0041] Various details are now illustrated. For example, various different pieces of information can be used singularly or together as authentication context. In particular, authentication context may generally be information relevant to a secure session between the primary entity 104 and the identity provider 110. For example, authentication context may be location information for the primary entity 104. Such location information may be based on an IP address of the primary entity 104. In an alternative example, the authentication context information may simply be the IP address of the primary entity 104. In yet another alternative example, authentication context may be information about the primary entity 104, such as the device type of the primary entity 104, or some other distinguishing characteristic transmitted during authentication and verifiable by inspection of the primary entity 104. Thus for example, if a user confirms that the authentication context is being used to purchase a particular book from a particular retailer, a nefarious individual would not be able to use the issued tokens to purchase a different book from a different retailer.

For example, in some embodiments, the secondary entity 1 16 may display the authentication context to the user and receive user input confirming that the authentication context is accurate.
