  1. 1
A system for stroke analysis comprising:a racket;an inertial sensor for coupling to the racket, the inertial sensor comprising an accelerometer array with three degrees of freedom in acceleration and a gyro array with three degrees of freedom in rotation;a processor connected to the inertial sensor, the processor configured to generate stroke histories describing acceleration and rotation of the racket based on signals from the accelerometer and the gyro arrays over a number of racket interactions;and a memory device connected to the processor, the memory device configured to store the stroke histories;wherein the processor is configured to segment the stoke histories into stroke profiles based on racket interaction impulses identified within the stroke histories, wherein the interaction impulses represent angular momentum transfers during ball strikes and other racket interactions, corresponding to simultaneous impulse forces representing linear momentum transfers;wherein the processor is configured to generate stroke trajectories based on the stroke profiles, the stroke trajectories describing at least one of position, velocity and orientation of the racket, and configured to separating the stroke profiles into stroke types based on pattern recognition of the stroke profiles or stroke trajectories;and wherein the processor is configured alone or in combination with a linked microprocessor.
  2. 8
A stroke analysis method comprising:with an inertial sensor, sensing acceleration of a racket and sensing angular velocity of the racket;with a processor configured alone or in combination with a linked microprocessor: generating stroke histories based on the acceleration and angular velocity of the racket over a number of racket interactions;identifying interaction impulses within the stroke histories, wherein the interaction impulses represent angular momentum transfers during ball strikes and other racket interactions, corresponding to simultaneous impulse forces representing linear momentum transfers;generating stroke profiles by segmenting the stroke histories based on the interaction impulses;converting the stroke profiles into stroke trajectories, the stroke trajectories describing at least one of position, velocity and orientation of the racket;and separating the stroke profiles into stroke types based on pattern recognition of the stroke profiles or the stroke trajectories.
  3. 10
The method of any of claims 8-9, further comprising generating a real-time cue based on the stroke profiles, the real-time cue providing reinforcement of good stroke technique.
  4. 11
The method of any of claims 8-10, further comprising generating a real-time cue based on additional stroke features including spin, topspin, backspin, racket speed racket trajectory, ball speed, ball trajectory, and the magnitude and direction of the linear and angular momentum impulses measured during stroke interactions.
  5. 12
The method of any of claims 8-11, further comprising generating a real-time cue based on changes or trends in a stroke profile, or changes or trends in the variability of a stroke profile, to predict or diagnose injury.
  6. 13
The method of any of claims 8-12, further comprising connecting the processor to the inertial sensor for wireless communications, data transfer, or both, wherein the processor is configured for wearing by or attachment to a player, or to the player's wrist, arm or hip.
  7. 14
The method of any of claims 8-13, further comprising downloading data to the linked microprocessor via a transmitter or data port, or a combination thereof, for additional analysis and processing.
  8. 15
The method of any of claims 8-14, further comprising transmitting raw sensor data, the stroke profiles and the stroke trajectories to the linked microprocessor, for example a linked personal computer, laptop, tablet computer, smartphone, or portable data processing system.
