  1. 1
An antenna system comprising:a plurality of lens sets (110) forming a wide-angle multiple beam phased array, each lens set (110) including: a lens (112) having a nominal focal point and either being a substantially flat lens constructed using one or more layers of a metasurface or diffraction grating or being a flattened lens;at least one feed element (152) aligned with the lens (112) and configured to direct a signal through the lens (112) at a desired direction;wherein either the antenna system comprises at least one actuator (172, 174) for moving each of the at least one feed elements (152) with respect to the lens (112) to achieve the desired signal direction, or the at least one feed element (152) of each lens set (110) comprises a plurality of feed elements (152a, 152b) aligned with the lens (112) for the purposes of directing a signal through the lens (112) in different directions, and where the lens sets (110) are not identical in geometry, dielectric profiles, or a combination thereof, or wherein the plurality of lens sets (110) is placed in a nonuniform tiling configuration, wherein the tiling configuration of the plurality of lens sets (112) is configured to improve the antenna radiation pattern over a wide field of regard and/or frequency range .
  2. 5
The antenna system of any of claims 1 to 4, further comprising a switch (310, 716, 804, 1002) connected to each of the plurality of fixed or movable feed elements (152a, 152b) configured to selectively activate a subset of the plurality of feed elements (152a, 152b) to direct the signal through the lens.
  3. 8
The antenna system of any of claims 1-7, wherein the plurality of lens sets (110) includes a dielectric lens, a metamaterial lens, a metasurface lens, or a combination thereof.
  4. 10
The antenna system of any of claims 1-9, where the at least one actuator (172, 174) is configured to move each of the at least one feed elements (152) between a first position having a first desired signal direction and a second position having a second desired signal direction.
  5. 14
The antenna system of any of claims 1-13, wherein the antenna system is receive only, transmit-only, or combined receive-transmit, and wherein the antenna system is configured to communicate with a satellite system, or the antenna system is configured to conduct electronic beamforming on a spacecraft system for space-ground or space-space communications, or the antenna system is configured to provide satellite connectivity on cars and other ground vehicles, or on marine vehicles, or on manned or unmanned aircraft.
  6. 15
The antenna system of any of claims 1-13, wherein the antenna system is configured to provide fixed or dynamically reconfigurable, single- or multi-beam point-point terrestrial microwave links, or wherein the antenna system is configured to provide cellular telecom applications, such as 5G.
  7. 17
The antenna system of any of claims 1-16, where the lens sets (110), associated circuitry, and packaging include components to form a complete communications terminal, including housing (200), power supply, software, computing and control hardware, modem interface, and mechanical and electrical interfaces.
  8. 18
The antenna system of any of claims 1-17 comprising a positioning system including a feed support (170) and the one or more actuators (172, 174) for moving the feed support (170), wherein the feed elements (152) of the lens sets (110) mounted to the feed support (170) are movable relative to the lenses (112).
