  1. 1
A method of communicating a short message data packet via a mobile communications network from a communications terminal, the mobile communications network comprising a radio network part including a plurality of base stations for communicating data packets to or from the communications terminal via a radio access interface, and a core network part, the method comprising, when the communications terminal is in an idle state, communicating the short message data packet from the communications terminal directed to one of the base stations of the mobile communications network as a signalling message, after the communications terminal has attached to the base station, and using predetermined parameters for configuring a transmitter of the communications terminal which correspond with parameters with which a receiver in the base station is configured to receive the short message data packet, the short message data packet including an indication of context information for use by the mobile communications network for communicating the short message data packet to a mobility manager of the mobile communications network, wherein the context information is associated with one or more connections from the communications terminal to destination addresses or to the communications terminal from source addresses and is used to establish communications bearers by the mobile communications network for communicating the data packets to or from the communications terminal via the radio network part and the core network part, and the data packets are communicated by the core network part to the radio network part from source addresses or to the destination addresses from the radio network part.
  2. 2
The method of Claim 1 wherein the indication of context information included in the short message data packet comprises an identifier of the communications terminal.
  3. 3
The method of Claim 2 wherein the indication of context information included in the short message data packet comprising the identifier of the communications terminal indicates to the one of the base stations that there is no context available for communicating the short message data packet and that a default context or communications bearer is to be used for communicating the short message data packet.
  4. 4
The method of either of Claim 2 or Claim 3, comprising receiving the identifier of the communications terminal from the communications network as part of an attach procedure.
  5. 5
The method of any of Claims 2 to 4, wherein the identifier of the communications terminal is a temporary international mobile subscriber identity number or a representation thereof.
  6. 6
The method of any of Claims 1 to 5, wherein the predetermined parameters comprise at least one of an error correction coding scheme, a modulation scheme, time slots for the transmission, frequencies for the transmission and a transmission power level setting.
  7. 7
The method of any of Claims 1 to 6, comprising after communicating the short message data packet, entering a radio resource control, RRC, connected state, receiving an acknowledgement of the short message data packet, and responsive to receiving the acknowledgement, leaving the RRC connected state.
  8. 8
A communications terminal for communicating a short message data packet via a mobile communications network, the mobile communications network comprising a radio network part including a base station for communicating data packets to or from communications terminal via a radio access interface and a core network part, the communications terminal configured when in an idle state, to communicate the short message data packet directed to the base station of the mobile communications network as a signalling message, after the communications terminal has attached to the base station, and to use, for communicating the short message data packet, predetermined parameters for configuring a transmitter of the mobile communications terminal which correspond with parameters with which a receiver in the base station is configured to receive the short message data packet, wherein the short message data packet includes an indication of context information for use by the mobile communications network for communicating the short message data packet to a mobility manager of the mobile communications network.
  9. 9
The communications terminal of Claim 8, wherein the indication of context information included in the short message data packet comprises an identifier of the communications terminal.
  10. 10
The communications terminal of Claim 9, wherein the indication of context information included in the short message data packet comprising the identifier of the communications terminal indicates to the one of the base stations that there is no context available for communicating the short message data packet and that a default context or communications bearer is to be used for communicating the short message data packet.
  11. 11
The communications terminal of either Claim 9 or Claim 10, wherein the communications terminal is configured to receive the identifier of the communications terminal from the mobile communications network as part of an attach procedure.
  12. 12
The communications terminal of any of Claims 9 to 11, wherein the identifier of the communications terminal is a temporary international mobile subscriber identity number or a representation thereof.
  13. 13
The communications terminal of any of Claims 8 to 12, wherein the predetermined parameters comprise at least one of an error correction coding scheme, a modulation scheme, time slots for the transmission, frequencies for the transmission and a transmission power level setting.
  14. 14
The communications terminal of any of Claims 8 to 13, wherein the communications terminal is configured, after communicating the short message data packet, to enter a radio resource control, RRC, connected state, to receive an acknowledgement of the short message data packet, and responsive to receiving the acknowledgement, to leave the RRC connected state.
