  1. 1
A protective case (100) for an electronic device (800) having a touchscreen interface (801), a camera (802), and an external electrical interface (803), the protective case (100) comprising:an inner liner (110) for receiving and at least partially enclosing the electronic device (800);a first aperture (130) in the protective case (100) permitting access to the touchscreen interface (801) of the electronic device (800) when the electronic device (800) is installed in the protective case (100);a second aperture (140) in a back surface of the protective case (100) permitting optical access to the camera (802) of the installed electronic device (800);and an outer shell (120) including an attachment mechanism (121) for attaching an accessory (900) to the protective case (100), the attachment mechanism (121) including a receiver channel (122) to slidably receive a rail member (901) of the accessory (900) to removably attach the accessory (900) to the protective case (100), the receiver channel (122) including a lip (123) for retaining the rail member (901) in the receiver channel (122), the receiver channel (122) having a cross sectional size at a first end of the receiver channel (122) that differs from a cross sectional size of the receiver channel (122) at a second end of the receiver channel (122), the attachment mechanism (121) further including a snap feature (127), the snap feature (127) having an interference fit with a corresponding snap feature (902, 904) of the rail member (901) of the accessory (900) to removably lock the rail member (901) into the receiver channel (122) of the outer shell (120) when the rail member (901) is inserted into the receiver channel (122).
  2. 3
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 or 2 wherein the rail member (901) is insertable into the receiver channel (122) from the first end and the cross sectional size at the first end is larger than the cross sectional size at the second end such that a clearance gap between the receiver channel (122) and the rail member (901) decreases as an increasing amount of the rail member (901) is inserted into the receiver channel (122).
  3. 4
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the receiver channel (122) includes a draft.
  4. 5
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the snap feature (127) is in the receiver channel (122).
  5. 7
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein the attachment mechanism (121) includes a second snap feature (129), the second snap feature (129) having an interference fit with a second corresponding snap feature (903) of the rail member (901) to further removably lock the rail member (901) into the receiver channel (122) when the rail member (901) is inserted into the receiver channel (122).
  6. 9
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 7 or 8 wherein the second snap feature (129) includes at least one of a ball and a detent.
  7. 10
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 8 or 9 wherein at least one of the snap feature (127) and the second snap feature (129) is configured to apply force to the attached accessory (900) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the receiver channel (122) to reduce rattling and/or movement of the attached accessory (900) relative to the protective case (100).
  8. 11
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein the second aperture (140) includes a second attachment mechanism.
  9. 14
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 13 wherein the external electrical interface (803) of the electronic device (800) is accessible when the electronic device (800) is installed in the protective case (100), the attachment mechanism (121) positioned to enable the attached accessory (900) to interface to the external electrical interface (803) of the electronic device (800) when the accessory (900) is attached to the protective case (100) at the attachment mechanism (121).
  10. 15
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 14 further comprising a button pad (150) for actuating a button of the installed electronic device (800) from an outer surface of the protective case (100).
  11. 16
The protective case (100) according to any one of claims 1 to 15 further comprising a third aperture (160) in a side of the protective case (100) for accessing a switch of the installed electronic device (800).
