A handheld electromechanical surgical device (100), comprising:a non-sterile power-pack (101) including: at least one drive component, each drive component having a rotatable drive shaft (152a, 154a, 156a) extending therefrom;a main processor (157) coupled to the at least one drive component and configured to control each drive component;a battery (144) coupled to the main processor and the at least one drive component, the battery configured to power each drive component;an electrical receptacle (149) coupled to the main processor;and at least one control interface (130, 132a, 132b, 134a, 134b) coupled to the main processor (157), the at least one control interface actuatable to direct the main processor to control a functionality of at least one of the at least one drive component;and a sterile outer shell housing (10) configured to removably encase the power-pack, characterized in that : the sterile outer shell housing (10) defines a sterile barrier between the power-pack (106) and an exterior of the outer shell housing when encased about the power-pack to enable use thereof in a surgical environment without breaking sterility;the outer shell housing (10) includes: a coupler configured to transmit a rotation from the rotatable drive shaft (152a, 154a, 156a) of each drive component through the outer shell housing;at least one control button (30, 32a, 32b, 34a, 34b) in operative registration with each of the at least one control interfaces (130, 132a, 132b, 134a, 134b) such that actuation of the at least one control button actuates the at least one control interface in operative registration therewith;a pass-through connector (66) configured to transmit electrical communications from the electrical receptacle (149) through the outer shell housing;and a memory that stores a unique identifier associated with the outer shell housing (10) and is capable of being updated to mark the outer shell housing as "used";and the power-pack (101) includes: a power-pack memory (165);a communication bus system (171) coupled to the main processor (157), wherein the outer shell memory is configured to electrically couple with the communication bus system (171) to establish communication between the main processor (157) and the outer shell memory upon encasing the power-pack (101) within the outer shell housing (10);and a non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium (1104) storing instructions that, when executed by the main processor, cause the power-pack to determine whether communication between the main processor and the outer shell housing memory across the communication bus system is established, and, if communication is established, obtain the outer shell unique identifier from the outer shell housing memory across the communication bus system, store the outer shell housing identifier in the power-pack memory, and mark the outer shell housing as used in the outer shell housing memory to inhibit reuse of the outer shell housing.
