  1. 1
An absorbent article (20) for personal hygiene comprising:a liquid permeable topsheet (24), a liquid impermeable backsheet (25), an absorbent core (28) between the topsheet and backsheet, the absorbent core having a longitudinal axis (80') and comprising a core wrap enclosing an absorbent material (60), the core wrap being formed by materials selected from paper, tissues, films, wovens and nonwovens, or laminates of any of these, and the absorbent material comprising a superabsorbent polymer, wherein the periphery of the absorbent material within the core wrap defines an absorbent material deposition area (8), wherein the core wrap comprises a top side (16) and a bottom side (16'), wherein the absorbent core comprises a pair of longitudinally extending areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material through which the top side of the core wrap is attached to the bottom side of the core wrap by core wrap bonds (27), so that when the absorbent material swells the core wrap forms channels (26') along the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material, wherein the pair of longitudinally extending areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material are curved and are symmetrically disposed relative to the longitudinal axis (80') of the core and spaced apart from another over their whole distance by a smallest spacing distance of at least 5 mm, and the longitudinally extending areas substantially free of absorbent material do not extend up to any of the edges of the absorbent material deposition area;the absorbent article further comprising a fibrous layer (54), wherein the fibrous layer is at least partially bonded to the top side or the bottom side of the core wrap in the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material, so that the formation of the channels (26') in the absorbent core as the absorbent material swells causes the formation of corresponding ditches (29) in the fibrous layer.
  2. 4
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein at least one of the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material has a length projected on the longitudinal axis (80) of the article which is at least 10% of the length (L) of the absorbent article.
  3. 5
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material have a width (Wc) in at least in some part of the areas of at least 2 mm.
  4. 6
An absorbent article according to the preceding claim, wherein the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material have a width (Wc) in at least in some part of the areas of from 4 mm to 14 mm.
  5. 8
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the fibrous layer (54) comprises at least 50% by weight of cross-linked cellulose fibers and/or does not comprise a superabsorbent polymer.
  6. 9
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the topsheet is directly or indirectly attached to the fibrous layer (54) in the area of the ditches (29).
  7. 10
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the absorbent material deposition area is rectangular or is shaped with a width narrower at the crotch point (C) than the maximum width of the absorbent material deposition area in the rest of the core, wherein the crotch point is defined as the point placed at a distance of two fifth of the length of the article (L) from the front edge (10) of the absorbent article on the longitudinal axis (80).
  8. 11
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the absorbent core comprises a first absorbent layer and a second absorbent layer, the first absorbent layer comprising a first substrate (16) and a first layer of superabsorbent polymers (61), the second absorbent layer comprising a second substrate (16') and a second layer of superabsorbent polymers (62), and a fibrous thermoplastic adhesive material (51) at least partially bonding each layers of superabsorbent polymers to their respective substrate, the first substrate and the second substrate forming the core wrap.
  9. 12
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, comprising an additional layer (52) between the topsheet (24) and the fibrous layer (54), wherein the additional layer can be an acquisition layer, preferably wherein the topsheet is attached to additional layer in attachment areas (68) that at least partially overlap with the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material of the core.
  10. 13
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the substantially absorbent material free areas 26 are present within the crotch region of the article, in particular at least at the same longitudinal level as the crotch point (C), wherein the crotch region of the article is defined as the region longitudinally centered at the crotch point (C) and extending towards the front and towards the back of the absorbent article by a distance of one fifth of L in each direction.
  11. 14
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the fibrous layer (54) is bonded to the top side of the core wrap in two longitudinally extending areas (66, 66') separated by a non-bonded zone in a central region of the fibrous layer (54), and optionally wherein the topsheet is attached directly or indirectly to the fibrous layer (54) in two attachment areas (68, 68') covering the areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material and separated by a non-attached zone.
  12. 16
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the article is a baby diaper.
  13. 17
An absorbent article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the pair of longitudinally extending areas (26) substantially free of absorbent material are concave towards the longitudinal axis (80').
