    A system (100) for providing advanced messaging services in a wireless communications network, the system comprising:one or more messaging servers (108,110,112,114) that are configured to interface with the wireless communications network (106,124,126) to perform the advanced messaging services for one or more mobile units (134), wherein the advanced messaging services comprise Push-to-X messages;wherein the one or more messaging servers (108,110,112,114) and the one or more mobile units (134) that use the advanced messaging services are configured to communicate with each other using control messages transmitted across the wireless communications network (106,124,126);wherein the advanced messaging services include attachments for the Push-to-X messages that are stored on one or more storage servers (148) that are configured to interface with the wireless communications network, and the control messages communicated between the one or more messaging servers and the one or more mobile units identify a location for retrieving the attachments that are stored on the one or more storage servers;and wherein a Quality-of-Service for transfer of the attachments is treated differently from other traffic in the wireless communications network;wherein the one or more mobile units (134) download only selected ones of the attachments using a Uniform Resource Identifier, URI, provided by the messaging server;wherein the URI, is allocated only when the one or more mobile units (134) request a download of the attachments.

    A method of providing advanced messaging services in a wireless communications network (106,124,126), comprising:interfacing one or more messaging servers (108,110,112,114) to the wireless communications network to perform the advanced messaging services for one or more mobile units (134), wherein the advanced messaging services comprise Push-to-X messages;wherein the one or more messaging servers and the one or more mobile units (134) that use the advanced messaging services communicate with each other using control messages transmitted across the wireless communications network;wherein the advanced messaging services include attachments for the Push-to-X messages that are stored on one or more storage servers (148) that interface with the wireless communications network, and the control messages communicated between the one or more messaging servers and the one or more mobile units identify a location for retrieving the attachments that are stored on the one or more storage servers;wherein a Quality-of-Service for transfer of the attachments is treated differently from other traffic in the wireless communications network;wherein the one or more mobile units (134) download only selected ones of the attachments using a Uniform Resource Identifier, URI, provided by the messaging server;and wherein the URI, is allocated only when the one or more mobile units (134) request a download of the attachments.
