  1. 1
A medical drilling device (200) comprising:a housing (210) comprising a proximal end of the housing and a distal end;an axial drive shaft extending through a region of the housing between the proximal and distal ends and engaged with an axial drive motor (230);a rotational drive shaft extending through a region of the housing between the proximal and distal ends and engaged with a rotational drive motor (260) configured to rotate the rotational drive shaft around a longitudinal axis of the rotational drive shaft;a coupler (290) configured to rotate with the rotational drive shaft around the longitudinal axis of the rotational drive shaft and removably couple with a working tool (310);a drill guide assembly coupled to the axial drive shaft and comprising a drill guide (370) configured to receive the working tool (310) therethrough, a forward surface guide (302), and a rear surface guide (300), wherein the forward surface guide couples to the drill guide;a transducer interfaced to the axial drive shaft;and an electronics package in electronic communication with the transducer, wherein the electronics package is configured to control actuation of the axial drive motor to cause the axial drive shaft to drive the drill guide assembly in an axial direction towards the proximal end of the housing thereby revealing a portion of the working tool (310) beyond a distal end of the drill guide available to engage a target tissue, characterized in that , the axial drive shaft is axially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the rotational drive shaft.
  2. 5
The device of any preceding claim, wherein the depth the working tool penetrates a bone is pre-programmable by an operator.
  3. 6
The device of any of claims 3 to 5, wherein the transducer comprises an electronic, optical, magnetic or mechanical rotary encoder;an incremental rotary encoder;or an absolute rotary encoder.
  4. 7
The device of any of claims 3 to 6, wherein the transducer is selected from the group consisting of a synchro, a resolver, a rotary variable differential transformer (RVDT) and a rotary potentiometer.
  5. 8
The device of any preceding claim, further comprising a torque sensor coupled to the rotational drive motor, wherein the electronics package is in communication with the torque sensor, and wherein the electronics package is programmable to receive torque readings of the rotational drive motor from the torque sensor and generate one or more signals indicating passage of the working tool through varied layers of the target tissue having differences in material strength.
  6. 9
The device of any preceding claim, wherein the axial and rotational drive shafts, axial drive motor, rotational drive motor, coupler, transducer and electronics package are modular and can be removed from the device through an external access port.
  7. 10
The device of any preceding claim, wherein a proximal region of the forward surface guide (302) couples to the rear surface guide (300), and wherein the rear surface guide couples to the axial drive shaft.
  8. 13
The device of any of claims 10 to 12, wherein the surface guides each have one, two, three or more arms that extend outward from the longitudinal axis and provide support to bear a load during operation of the device.
