14 claims: 8 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A flexible container (10) comprising:four individual panels (18, 20, 22, 24) of flexible film material, the four panels (18, 20, 22, 24) sealed together to form each of the following (i)-(iv) (i) a body portion (47);(ii) a neck portion (30), and a flare portion (50) that extends from the neck portion (30);(iii) a tapered transition portion (48) joining the body portion (47) and the neck portion (30);(iv) the neck portion (30) having a reduced width, the flare portion (50) having an expanded end (51);and the width of the flare portion (50) gradually increases from the neck portion (30) to the expanded end (51).
  2. 2
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 1 wherein the expanded end (51) has a width that is from 1.1 times to 8.0 times greater than the width of the neck portion (30).
  3. 4
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 1 to 3 comprising a fitment (70) inserted into the flare portion (50), preferably the fitment (70) comprises a base (72) having a circular cross section, the base (72) sealed to each of the four panels (18, 20, 22, 24) in the neck portion (30), more preferably the seal between the base (72) and the neck portion (30) defines an excess flare portion (50) having an open expanded end (51).
  4. 6
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 4 or 5 wherein the panels (18, 20, 22, 24) are formed from a multilayer film having a seal layer comprising a polymer;and the fitment (70) comprises a polyolefin having an Izod impact resistance from greater than 50 J/m to 500 J/m and a melt temperature (Tm) greater than or equal to the Tm of the seal layer polymer.
  5. 9
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 7 or 8 wherein each panel (18, 20, 22, 24) includes a bottom face (26a, 26b, 26c, 26d) comprising two opposing peripheral tapered seals (40a, 40b, 40c, 40d), each peripheral tapered seal (40a, 40b, 40c, 40d) extending from a respective peripheral seal 41, each peripheral tapered seal 41 comprising an inner edge (29a, 29b, 29c, 29d), the peripheral tapered seals (40a, 40b, 40c, 40d) converging at a bottom seal area (33);the front panel bottom face (26a) comprises a first line (A) defined by the inner edge (29a) of the first peripheral tapered seal (40a) and a second line (B) defined by the inner edge (29b) of the second peripheral tapered seal (40b) inner edge (29b), the first line (A) intersecting the second line (B) at an apex point (35a) in the bottom seal area (33);the front panel bottom face (26a) has a bottom distalmost inner seal point (37a) on the inner edge;and the apex point (35a) is separated from the bottom distalmost inner seal point (37a) by a distance from 0 mm to less than 8.0 mm.
  6. 12
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 10 or 11 wherein the seal is re-sealable.
  7. 13
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 10 to 12 comprising a closure for the seal.
  8. 14
The flexible container (10) of any of claims 1, 7 or 10 wherein the flare portion (50) defines a frustoconical-shaped inner volume when the flexible container (10) is on an expanded configuration.
