15 claims: 7 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A wearable electronic device comprising:an enclosure (114) having a sidewall with a button aperture defined therethrough;a crown (510, 610) having a head (548, 648) positioned adjacent a side of the enclosure and a stem (550, 650) that extends into the button aperture;an optical sensor (542, 642) positioned along a side of the stem and operative to track a rotational movement of the stem about a rotational axis;a dome switch (160) positioned proximate an end of the stem and operative to track a translational movement of the stem along the rotational axis;a touch-sensitive display (116) positioned at least partially within the enclosure and configured to depict a selectively modifiable graphical output;and a processing element (124) housing within the enclosure and operative to distinguish between first and second types of input corresponding to the translational and rotational movement of the stem.
  2. 6
The wearable electronic device of any preceding claim, wherein the translational movement is an inward translation.
  3. 7
The wearable electronic device of any preceding claim, wherein:the wearable electronic device further comprises a clip (143) configured to restrict movement of the head away from the enclosure.
  4. 9
The wearable electronic device of any preceding claim, further comprising:an O-ring positioned around the stem (150) and within the button aperture, the O-ring maintaining contact with an interior surface of the button aperture during the rotation of the crown and the translation of the crown.
  5. 11
The wearable electronic device of any preceding claim, wherein:the crown comprises a trackable element (546);and the optical sensor (542) is configured to detect rotational movement of the crown by detecting light reflected from the trackable element.
  6. 13
The wearable electronic device of any preceding claim, wherein:the dome switch comprises a collapsible dome;the end of the stem (550, 650) is configured to compress the collapsible dome in response to the translation of the crown;and the collapsible dome is configured to produce a tactile output in response to the compression.
  7. 15
The wearable electronic device of any preceding claim, wherein:the head includes a cylindrical body;and a series of tactile features are formed around the cylindrical body.
