14 claims: 2 independent, 12 dependent

  1. 1
An electromechanical surgical system, comprising:an end effector (16) configured to perform at least one function;an adapter assembly (14) being arranged for selectively interconnecting the end effector and a hand-held surgical instrument (10);a one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface (36) extending through the end effector, the adapter assembly, and the hand-held surgical instrument;and the hand-held surgical instrument including an instrument housing (17,18,19) defining a connecting portion (11) for selectively connecting (22) with the adapter assembly;a master circuit (34) coupled to the one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface and configured to identify or control the adapter assembly or the end effector;a power source (44) coupled to the one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface and configured to provide power to the adapter assembly or the end effector;a first switch (38) configured to connect the master circuit to the one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface;a second switch (42) configured to connect the power source to the one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface;and a controller (30) including a processor (32) configured to control operation of the hand-held surgical instrument, the controller having a wake-up pin (48) connected to the one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface, the wake-up pin is configured to receive a presence pulse from the end effector or the adapter.
  2. 12
A method for waking up an electromechanical surgical system having a housing that is couplable to a slave device, the method comprising:disconnecting a one-wire master circuit from a one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface;connecting a power source to the one-wire bidirectional serial communications interface;and detecting a presence pulse from the slave device, wherein if the presence pulse is detected, the electromechanical surgical system is placed in an active state.
