A surface excavation machine including wear sensing, the surface excavation machine including:a rotatable reducing structure (34) having an axis of rotation (40) and including a drum (38;738) and a plurality of reducing elements (42;310, 312;Al, Bl, C1, A2, B2, C2, A3, B3, C3;742) carried by the drum (38;738) and spaced about the circumference of the drum, the drum (38;738) being at least partially covered by a shroud (78) disposed radially outward from the drum;a wear sensing system (70;800) including a sensor (60) mounted inside the shroud (78) adjacent to the rotatable reducing structure (34), the sensor being an inductive sensor, wherein the sensor (60) senses a general wear state of at least one of the reducing elements (42;310, 312;Al, Bl, C1, A2, B2, C2, A3, B3, C3;742) by sensing a general physical characteristic of the reducing element (42;310, 312;Al, Bl, C1, A2, B2, C2, A3, B3, C3;742) when the surface excavation machine is performing a reducing operation without measuring a position of a specific point on the rotatable reducing structure (34);the machine being characterized by further comprising a breaker structure (84) positioned within the shroud (78) upstream from the sensor (60) to prevent material from damaging the sensor, the breaker structure (84) being spaced a first radial distance from the axis of rotation (40) of the rotatable reducing structure (34) and the sensor (60) being spaced a second radial distance from the axis of rotation (40) of the rotatable reducing structure (34), the second radial distance being longer than the first radial distance.
