  1. 1
A network, comprising:a plurality of network switches (112-1, 112-2, 112-3, 112-4) connected via links;and a controller (100) external to the plurality of network switches, the controller adapted to monitor a logical topology of a network (110), and identify a link that is blocked by a Spanning Tree Protocol ,STP, wherein the controller is adapted to configure at least one of the network switches to identify specific traffic having at least one of a priority requirement, latency requirement, packet-loss requirement or security requirement different from that of general traffic, based on at least one of a priority, source or content type of the specific traffic;and the controller is adapted to configure via the Openflow protocol the at least one of the network switches to transmit the specific traffic along the blocked link while not allowing general traffic to traverse the blocked link, characterized in that the plurality of network switches are configured to operate according to the Openflow protocol for the specific traffic and STP protocol for the general traffic, wherein the STP protocol is a switch-to-switch protocol in which the plurality of network switches are peers and a global view of the entire network is unknown.
  2. 9
A method for configuring a network comprising a plurality of network switches (112-1, 112-2, 112-3, 112-4)which are connected via links, the method comprising:monitoring, by a controller external to the plurality of network switches, a logical topology of the network and identifying a link that is blocked by a Spanning Tree Protocol, STP;and configuring, by the controller, at least one of the network switches to identify specific traffic having at least one of a priority requirement, latency requirement, packet loss requirement or security requirement different from that of general traffic, based on at least one of a priority, source or content type of the specific traffic;and configuring, by the controller, via the Openflow protocol the at least one of the network switches to transmit the specific traffic along the blocked link, while not allowing general traffic to traverse the blocked link;characterized in that the plurality of network switches are configured to operate according to the Openflow protocol for the specific traffic and STP protocol for the general traffic, wherein the STP protocol is a switch-to-switch protocol in which the plurality of network switches are peers and a global view of the entire network is unknown.
  3. 10
A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions (420) that, if executed by a processor (410) of a device (400), cause the processor to configure a network comprising a plurality of network switches (112-1, 112-2, 112-3, 112-4) which are connected via links, the instructions comprising instructions to:monitor, by a controller external to the plurality of network switches, a logical topology of the network and identifying a link that is blocked by a Spanning Tree Protocol, STP;and configure, by the controller, at least one of the network switches to identify specific traffic having at least one of a priority requirement, latency requirement, packet loss requirement or security requirement different from that of general traffic, based on at least one of a priority, source or content type of the specific traffic;and configure, by the controller, via the Openflow protocol the at least one of the network switches to transmit the specific traffic along the blocked link, while not allowing general traffic to traverse the blocked link;characterized in that the plurality of network switches are configured to operate according to the Openflow protocol for the specific traffic and STP protocol for the general traffic, wherein the STP protocol is a switch-to-switch protocol in which the plurality of network switches are peers and a global view of the entire network is unknown.
