  1. 1
An aggregation switch (106a ; 106b) in a multi-chassis system, comprising:a first set of member port interfaces (240) of the aggregation switch grouped with one or more member port interfaces of a remote aggregation switch (106a ;106b) configured to form a multi-chassis link aggregate (MC-LAG), wherein the multi-chassis link aggregate (MC-LAG) couples the aggregation switch (106a;106b) and the remote aggregation switch (106a ;106b) to an edge node (104);a second set of port interfaces (240) configured to form a virtual fabric link for coupling the aggregation switch (106a ;106b) to the remote aggregation switch (106a ;106b);a processing module (266) operable to: determine a connection failure of the virtual fabric link to the remote aggregation switch (106a ;106b);reconfigure one or more of the first set of port interfaces (240) into a link aggregate (LAG) for coupling to the edge node (104);and initiate a spanning tree protocol in the one or more of the first set of port interfaces (240).
  2. 7
A method in a switch (106a ; 106b), comprising:operating in a multi-chassis mode, wherein operating in a multi-chassis mode includes: communicating with an end node over a first set of port interfaces (240) in the switch (106a ;106b), wherein the first set of ports are configured to form a multi-chassis link aggregate (MC-LAG) with one or more port interfaces (240) of a remote switch (106a ;106b) to the end node;communicating with the remote switch (106a ;106b) over a second set of port interfaces (240) in the switch (106a ;106b) configured to form a virtual fabric link;receiving a command to operate in a stand-alone mode;in response to the command, reconfiguring a plurality of the first set of port interfaces (240) to a link aggregate and initiating a spanning tree protocol in the plurality of the first set of port interfaces (240).
