    Claims of equivalent WO 2013144600 A2 Claims 1 . A fibre laser having an optical cavity comprising an optical fibre having a gain medium and imaging means for imaging light leaving the fibre back into the fibre.

    A fibre laser as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the gain medium of the fibre is a rare-earth doped medium such as ytterbium-doped or erbium doped gain medium.

    A fibre laser as claimed in any of the preceding claims comprising at least one optical element for increasing the length of the optical cavity.

    A fibre laser as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein the optical cavity comprises modelocking means.

    A fibre laser having an optical cavity comprising an optical fibre having a gain medium and a Gires Tournois interferometer for compressing output pulses, wherein the optical fibre has a round trip loss of less than 200000 fs 2 , for example less than 180000 fs 2 , for example less than 160000 fs 2 , for example less than 153400 fs 2 , for example less than 140000 fs 2 for example less than 120000 fs 2 for example less than 100000 fs 2 and/or a round trip length of less than 2.3 m, preferably less than 1 m, for example less than 50 cm or less than 30 cm.

    A fibre laser as claimed in any of claims 15 to 17, wherein the optical cavity comprises modelocking means, optionally wherein the modelocking means include a nonlinear polarisation evolution system.

    A fibre laser as claimed in any of claims 15 to 18 arranged to provide pulses having a duration of less than 1 ps, for example less than 500 fs, preferably less than 200 fs or less than 100 fs, and/or with an average power exceeding 500 mW and/or a repetition rate greater than 300 MHz.

    A system as claimed in any of claims 24 to 26 wherein the pulses are IR pulses.

    A system as claimed in any of claims 24 to 27 wherein the supercontinuum spans at least one optical octave.

    A system for generating a pulsed tunable output comprising a laser as claimed in any of claims 1 to 23 adapted to generate pulses having, for example, duration less than 200fs and means for causing non-linear frequency conversion of the pulses to provide a tunable pulsed source.
