Vestibular stimulation apparatus

Abstract

A device and associated method for providing vestibular stimulation to an individual includes active elements positioned on or proximate an ear insert. The active elements include but are not limited to at least one electrode, at least one thermometer, and at least one thermoelectric transducer. The device includes a computerized control module regulating the active elements. The device incorporates an ear insert that allows the active elements to engage the individual's ear canal and therefore access the individual's vestibular system. Vestibular stimulation applied to the individual is customized for directly stimulating desired regions of the brain for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes.; In a preferred embodiment, the device provides vestibular stimulation sufficient to promote physiological changes in the individual, the changes selected from the group consisting of circadian temperature cycle time shifts, ascorbic acid production, serotonin production, acetylcholine production, histamine production, and heat shock protein production.

15 claims: 10 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A device for delivering vestibular stimulation to an individual, comprising:(a) an ear insert so dimensioned as to be insertable into an ear canal of the individual;(b) at least one thermoelectric transducer included in the ear insert capable of affecting the vestibular system of the individual;and (c) a controller connected to the thermoelectric transducer(s) and configured to activate the thermoelectric transducer(s) to deliver caloric vestibular stimulation to the vestibular system of the individual, wherein the controller comprises a control module configured to control the magnitude, duration and wave pattern of the vestibular stimulation.
  2. 3
The device of any one of claims 1 to 2, wherein the at least one thermoelectric transducer comprises a plurality of thermoelectric transducers.
  3. 6
The device of any one of claims 3 to 5, wherein each of the said plurality of thermoelectric transducers is operatively associated with the controller by a separate lead.
  4. 7
The device of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein each thermoelectric transducer comprises a thin film thermoelectric transducer.
  5. 8
The device of any one of claims 1 to 7, further comprising at least one electrode attached to the ear insert for electrically stimulating the vestibular system of the individual, wherein the controller is operatively associated with the electrode(s) and is configured to activate the electrode(s) to deliver electrical stimulation to the vestibular system of the individual.
  6. 10
The device of any one of claims 8 to 9, wherein the controller is configured to deliver electrical pulses.
  7. 11
The device of any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising one or more sensors.
  8. 13
The device of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the thermal stimulation comprises an increase in the temperature of the individual's ear canal.
  9. 14
The device of any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the thermal stimulation comprises a reduction in the temperature of the individual's ear canal.
  10. 15
A system comprising the device of any one of claims 1 to 14.
