15 claims: 8 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A telecommunications network including a plurality of access points (5) and a network core (3), wherein a plurality of telecommunications devices (1) are registered with the network and communicate with the network core (3) via the access points (5), characterised in that an authentication procedure between one of the devices (1) and the network core (3) generates a master cipher key which is used to derive cryptographically separate keys for a plurality of ciphered links between the device (1) and the network core (3).
  2. 6
The network of any one preceding claim wherein the plurality of ciphered links includes a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) control plane between the telecommunications device and the network core.
  3. 7
The network of any one preceding claim wherein the plurality of ciphered links includes an Access Stratum (AS) control plane between the telecommunications device and an access point.
  4. 8
The network of any one preceding claim wherein the plurality of ciphered links includes a user plane between the telecommunications device and the network core.
  5. 9
A key derivation method in a telecommunications network including a plurality of access points (5) and a network core (3), wherein the telecommunications device (1) is registered with the network and communicates with the network core (3) via an access point (5), the method comprising :performing an authentication procedure between the device (1) and the network core (3);characterised by : using the authentication procedure to generate a master cipher key;using the master cipher key to derive cryptographically separate keys for a plurality of ciphered links between the device (1) and the network core (3).
  6. 13
The method of any one of claims 9 to 12, further including generating or deriving integrity keys alongside the cipher keys.
  7. 14
The method of any one of claims 9 to 13 wherein the plurality of ciphered links for which the master cipher key is used to derive cryptographically separate keys includes:a Non-Access Stratum (NAS) control plane between the telecommunications device and the network core;and an Access Stratum (AS) control plane between the telecommunications device and an access point.
  8. 15
The method of any one of claims 9 to 14 wherein the plurality of ciphered links for which the master cipher key is used to derive cryptographically separate keys includes a user plane between the telecommunications device and the network core.
