EP2811679A1

A network apparatus and method of operating the same with polling

Abstract

An apparatus for transmitting data blocks on a communications channel having a radio link between two stations including a user equipment is described, comprising: means for receiving first data blocks from the user equipment; means for transmitting second data blocks to the user equipment; and means for dynamically setting a polling inteval for the transmission of polling mesages to the user equipment after transmission of the second data blocks, the polling interval being set in accordance with at least one of: a size of one or more data blocks received by the apparatus from the user equipment, a size of one or more blocks transmitted from the apparatus to the user equipment, and a service to which the user equipment is subscribed. The apparatus may be used as a PCU in a cellular mobile telephone system.

  1. 1
A method for performing communication between a user equipment and a network apparatus, comprising:the network apparatus transmitting first data blocks to the user equipment;the network apparatus receiving second data blocks from the user equipment;the network apparatus transmitting one or more polling messages to request that the user equipment acknowledge receipt of transmitted data blocks, wherein the one or more polling messages are sent according to a polling interval dynamically set by the network apparatus after transmission of the first data blocks, wherein the polling interval is set responsive to a size of one or more data blocks received by the apparatus from the user equipment or a size of one or more data blocks transmitted from the apparatus to the user equipment.
  2. 3
The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the polling interval is set further responsive to at least an estimated used transmission capacity value for a radio coverage area of a cellular radio network in which the network apparatus is located.
  3. 4
The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the polling interval is set according to a quality of service (QoS) profile associated with the user equipment.
  4. 5
The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the polling interval is set according to a parameter characterizing a quality level of signals received from the user equipment.
  5. 6
The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the polling interval is set independently for each of a plurality of user equipments.
  6. 7
A network apparatus configured to implement any of claims 1 to 6.
  7. 8
  8. 10
The method of any of claims 8 and 9, wherein the polling interval is set further responsive to at least an estimated used transmission capacity value for a radio coverage area of a cellular radio network in which the network apparatus is located.
  9. 11
The method of any of claims 8 to 10, wherein the polling interval is set further according to a quality of service (QoS) profile associated with the user equipment.
  10. 12
The method of any of claims 8 to 11, wherein the polling interval is set further according to a parameter characterizing a quality level of signals received from the user equipment.
  11. 13
The method of any of claims 8 to 12, wherein the polling interval is set independently for each of a plurality of user equipments.
  12. 14
The method of any of claims 8 to 13, wherein the polling interval is set for a group of user equipments.
  13. 15
A user equipment configured to implement any of claims 8 to 14.
