15 claims: 5 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A suture (10; 210) comprising:an elongate body (11;211) including a proximal end and a distal end;a loop (12;212) integrally formed on the distal end of the elongate body (11;211), wherein at least a portion of the loop (12;212) includes a shape memory polymeric material;and characterised in that the shape memory polymeric material is configured to radially contract and axially lengthen when transitioning from a temporary configuration to a permanent configuration, and the radial contraction and axial lengthening causes expanding of the loop (12;212), wherein loosening of the opening formed in the loop (12;212) causes, when said loop expands, the release of a therapeutic agent therefrom.
  2. 5
The suture according (10;210) to any preceding claim, wherein the shape memory polymer is selected from the group consisting of degradable materials, non-degradable materials, and combinations thereof.
  3. 10
The suture (10;210) according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the shape memory polymer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of oligo (epsilon-caprolactone) dimethacrylates, oligo (epsilon-caprolactone) butyl acrylates, (n-butyl acrylate), oligo (epsilon caprolactone) diol/oligo (p-dioxanone) diol copolymers, polycaprolactone dimethacrylate poly(butyl acrylate) blends, and combinations thereof.
  4. 11
The suture (10;210) according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the shape memory polymer comprises a block copolymer of polydioxanone and polylactide.
  5. 13
The suture (10;210) according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the shape memory polymer comprises a block copolymer of trimethylene carbonate and polylactide.
