  1. 1
A method for predicting one or more terms from a single continuous gesture across a gesture-sensitive keyboard comprising:sampling at a plurality of times a location of the gesture on the gesture-sensitive keyboard as the gesture is performed;and predicting the one or more terms from the plurality of samples by: generating one or more features from the plurality of samples, wherein each of the one or more features relates to a target on the gesture-sensitive keyboard that a user may have intended to input when performing the gesture, and wherein each feature comprises a distance metric which corresponds to a minimum distance between the gesture and the target;generating a prefix tree of terms which includes the one or more features;finding one or more paths through the prefix tree of terms given the one or more features and using the distance metric of said each feature of the one or more features, wherein finding the one or more paths comprises using the distance metrics to generate a probability estimate associated with each path through the prefix tree of terms;returning most probable paths as the predicted one or more terms;and displaying on a display panel of a user interface the predicted one or more terms.
  2. 4
The method of any preceding claim, wherein predicting the one or more terms comprises predicting one or more words, wherein the one or more words are predicted on the basis of the single continuous gesture.
  3. 5
The method of any one of claims 1, 2 and 3, wherein predicting the one or more terms comprises predicting a phrase comprising a sequence of two or more words on the basis of the single continuous gesture which corresponds to the user gesturing over characters for multiple words on the gesture-sensitive keyboard.
  4. 6
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the sampling is performed at a predetermined frequency.
  5. 7
A computer readable medium having stored thereon computer program means for causing a processor to carry out the method of any one of claims 1-6.
  6. 8
A system comprising:a feature identification means configured to generate one or more features from a plurality of samples, wherein each of the plurality of samples is sampled at a different time and corresponds to a location of a single continuous gesture on a gesture-sensitive keyboard as the gesture is being performed and, wherein each of the one or more features relates to one of a plurality of targets of the gesture sensitive keyboard that a user may have intended to input when performing the gesture, and wherein each feature comprises a distance metric which corresponds to the minimum distance between the gesture and the target;and a prediction means configured to predict one or more terms from the one or more features, the prediction means comprising: a prefix tree generating means configured to generate a prefix tree of terms which includes the one or more features;a path finding means configured to find one or more paths through the prefix tree of terms given the one or more features and using the distance metric of said each feature of the one or more features, wherein the path-finding algorithm uses the distance metrics to generate a probability estimate associated with each path through the prefix tree of terms;and means for returning most probable paths as the predicted one or more terms;and means for displaying on a display panel of a user interface the predicted one or more terms.
  7. 10
The system of any one of claims 8-9, wherein the prefix tree generating means is configured to generate the prefix tree of terms by retaining terms of a dictionary prefix tree which are allowed given the one or more features, wherein a term of the dictionary prefix tree may be retained even if a feature among the one or more features does not correspond to that term.
  8. 11
The system of any one of claims 8-10, wherein the plurality of targets correspond to the letters of the alphabet, and optionally word boundary delimiters, such a space bar, and/or punctuation symbols, wherein the prefix tree of terms comprises one or more nodes representing the last letter of a completed word, wherein the prefix tree generating means is configured to insert a node corresponding to a word boundary delimiter, such as a space character, into the prefix tree where there is a node corresponding to the last letter in a word
  9. 13
The system of any one of claims 8-12, wherein the prediction means is configured to predict one or more words on the basis of the single continuous gesture which corresponds to the user gesturing over one or more characters on the gesture-sensitive keyboard intended to indicate the prefix for that word.
  10. 14
The system of any one of claims 8-12, wherein the prediction means is configured to predict a phrase comprising a sequence of two or more words on the basis of the single continuous gesture which corresponds to the user gesturing over characters for multiple words on the gesture-sensitive keyboard.
