  1. 1
Method for adjusting device settings based on ambient audio waveform capture, the method comprising, by a social networking system:receiving (505), at an audio matching application (118) running on one or more servers of the social networking system an audio waveform fingerprint from a client device (122), the audio waveform fingerprint generated for one or more ambient audio waveforms captured (501) by the client device (122);searching (506) the received audio waveform fingerprint against a database of fingerprints stored in an audio object database (105);if a matching fingerprint is found, pulling (507) information relating to an audio object (305) associated with the matching fingerprint from the social networking system, the information relating to the audio object (305) being stored in the audio object database (105), wherein the information is metadata related to the audio object;searching (508), by the social networking system its own internal or third-party online databases for location information relating to the audio object (305), wherein the social networking system being aware of the client device's self-determined location (302) enhances the client device's self determined location (302) by matching the audio object (305) with entries in online audio databases associated with the general vicinity of the client device's self-determined location (302);transmitting (509), by the one or more servers of the social networking system, the enhanced location to the client device (122), for adjusting its device settings;the one or more servers of the social networking system receiving an audio waveform fingerprint in response to the client device (122) capturing an ambient audio waveform whenever a change in position of the client device (122) is detected via a GPS sensor (217) of the client device (122) or other location determination algorithms.
  2. 4
Method of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the audio waveform fingerprint is a small robust representation that summarizes the audio waveform or collection of audio waveforms, and/or the audio waveform fingerprint is represented by a vector generated by vector quantization.
  3. 5
Method of any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the one or more servers of the social networking system being a front end (120) of the social networking system, and/or the one or more servers of the social networking system receiving the audio waveform fingerprint from the client device (122) at the audio matching application (118).
  4. 6
Method of any of claims 1 to 5, comprising, by an audio waveform fingerprint matching algorithm (246), pulling uploaded audio waveform fingerprints from the same general time and area as the uploading client device (122).
  5. 7
The method of any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the self-reported location being ascertained through GPS coordinates, TDOA, or a self-reported location, such as a check-in.
  6. 8
Method of any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the method comprising pulling audio waveform fingerprints from other users in a geographic search area, the geographic search area being optionally decreased for areas in which a large number of audio waveform fingerprints are being uploaded.
  7. 11
A non-transitory, computer-readable media comprising instructions operable, when executed by one or more computing systems, to carry out a method comprising all the steps of a method according to at least one of claims 1 to 10.
  8. 12
Computer system (700) comprising a processor (702) and a storage (706) storing instructions when executed by the processor (702) to carry out a method comprising all the steps of a method according to at least one of claims 1 to 10.
