  1. 1
A method for determining a location of one or more user equipment, UE, in a Long Term Evolution, LTE, wireless system, the method comprising:determining that downlink reference signals are available for use in a downlink mode of operation, wherein the downlink reference signals include one or more of LTE position reference signals, PRS, and LTE cell specific reference signals, CRS;determining that uplink reference signals are available for use in an uplink mode of operation, wherein the uplink reference signals include LTE sounding reference signals, SRS, and wherein the downlink reference signals and the uplink reference signals are configured by the network;selecting from among the downlink mode of operation, the uplink mode of operation, and a two-way mode of operation as a mode of operation of the wireless system, wherein the two-way mode of operation is a combination of the downlink mode of operation and the uplink mode of operation;and utilizing the selected mode of operation to calculate a location of each UE among the one or more UE.
  2. 10
A system for tracking and locating wireless network devices in a Long Term Evolution, LTE, wireless system, the system comprising:a processor configured to receive and process one or more signals of the wireless network devices and configured to locate the wireless network devices;and a memory communicatively coupled to the processor when the system is operational, the memory bearing processor instructions that, when executed on the processor, cause the system to at least: determine that downlink reference signals available for use in a downlink mode of operation, wherein downlink reference signals include one or more of LTE position reference signals, PRS, and LTE cell specific reference signals, CRS;determine that uplink reference signals available for use in an uplink mode of operation, wherein the uplink reference signals include LTE sounding reference signals, SRS, and wherein the downlink reference signals and the uplink reference signals are configured by the network;select from among the downlink mode of operation, the uplink mode of operation, and a two-way mode of operation as a mode of operation, wherein the two-way mode of operation is a combination of the downlink mode of operation and the uplink mode of operation;and use the selected mode of operation to calculate a location of the wireless network devices.
