Calibration techniques for activity sensing devices

Abstract

Improved techniques and systems to calibrate an electronic device that is providing activity sensing are disclosed. The activity being sensed can, for example, correspond to walking or running by a user. In one embodiment, calibration can be performed by a portable electronic device so that activity data it receives from a remote sensor device can be more accurately processed. The improved techniques and systems to calibrate can be used to monitor, process, present and manage data captured by a remote sensor. The portable electronic device can also offer a convenient user interface that can be visual and/or audio based, customized to a particular application, user-friendly and/or dynamic. The portable electronic device can pertain to a portable media player and thus also provide media playback.

25 claims: 5 independent, 20 dependent

  1. 1
An activity monitoring system comprising:a portable electronic device;an activity sensor that wirelessly transmits activity sensor data to the electronic device;one or more processing units in the electronic device capable of: (a) performing a first calibration to produce a first modified calibration model, the first modified calibration model derived from a default calibration model and from first actual activity data received from the activity sensor;and (b) performing a second calibration to produce a second modified calibration model, the second modified calibration model derived from the first modified calibration model.
  2. 4
The activity monitoring system of any of claims 1 to 3, further comprising a user interface for providing user inputs that can be used by the one or more processing units.
  3. 11
The activity monitoring system of any of claims 1 to 9, wherein the activity monitoring system includes at least a wearable portable electronic device that can operatively connect to a computer, and wherein the second modified calibration model is stored in both the wearable portable electronic device and the computer.
  4. 19
A portable electronic device, comprising:a user interface for providing user input to the portable electronic device and user output from the portable electronic device;and one or more processing units capable of: monitoring a physiological characteristic of a user of the portable electronic device;receiving sensor data acquired from a sensor;processing the sensor data based on a calibration model;and modifying the calibration model based on sensor data from the sensor.
  5. 23
The portable electronic device of any of claims 19 to 22, wherein at least one of the processing units operates to monitor user performance during a calibration activity.
