Adaptive pilot structure to assist channel estimation in spread spectrum systems

Abstract

The present Invention relates generally to methods for generating a dynamic pilot symbol structure in spread spectrum communication systems, and in particular to the use of pilot symbols by user equipment in channel estimation. In one form, the method includes, allocating basic pilot symbols (402) at the beginning of each data chunk (404, 406) and spread over the plurality of sub-carrier frequencies; and selectively replacing data symbols (408) in each data chunk (400) with adaptive pilot symbols (410) according to the speed of the user equipment.

15 claims: 6 independent, 9 dependent

  1. 1
A communications method implemented in a spread spectrum communications system having a plurality of user equipments served by a cell, the communications method comprising:transmitting data symbols from a base station to each user equipment on a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies and at regular temporal positions during a transmission of a data chunk, wherein the data symbols comprise first pilot symbols adaptive to each user equipment and second pilot symbols fixed to the plurality of user equipments, and wherein the first pilot symbols for said each user equipment are inserted into the data chunk for said each user equipment.
  2. 4
The communications method of one of claims 1 to 3. wherein the first pilot symbols are specific to said each user equipment.
  3. 5
The communications method of one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the base station transmits to said each user equipment pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk, and wherein said each user equipment utilizes the first pilot symbols for channel estimation.
  4. 6
The communications method of one of claims 1 to 5, wherein, prior to transmission of the data chunk, the base station transmits to said each user equipment pilot symbol information identifying a location of the first pilot symbols in the data chunk, and wherein said each user equipment detects the first pilot symbols.
  5. 8
A base station used in a spread spectrum communications system having a plurality of user equipments served by a cell, the base station comprising;a transmission means for transmitting data symbols to each user equipment I on a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies and at regular temporal positions during a transmission of a data chunk, wherein the data symbols comprise first pilot symbols adaptive to said each user equipment and second pilot symbols fixed to the plurality of user equipments, and wherein the first pilot symbols for said each user equipment are inserted into the data chunk for said each user equipment.
  6. 12
A user equipment used in a spread spectrum communications system having a base station, the user equipment comprising:a receiving means for receiving data symbols from the base station on a plurality of sub-carrier frequencies and at regular temporal positions during a transmission of a data chunk, wherein the data symbols comprise first pilot symbols adaptive to the user equipment and second pilot symbols fixed to a plurality of user equipments, and wherein the first pilot symbols for the user equipment are inserted into the data chunk for the user equipment.
