Generating and serving tiles in a digital mapping system

Abstract

A map tile serving system configured to serve map tiles in response to map requests from a user, comprising: a plurality of front end tile servers for serving one or more map tiles requested by a user; a request distributor for distributing requests for map tiles between the plurality of front end tile servers; and a plurality of back end tile servers communicatively coupled with the plurality of front end tile servers, each back end tile server having access to the map tiles, and configured to provide requested map tiles to a corresponding front end tile server.

16 claims: 12 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A map tile serving system configured to serve map tiles in response to map requests from a user, comprising:a plurality of front end tile servers for serving one or more map tiles requested by a user;a request distributor for distributing requests for map tiles between the plurality of front end tile servers;and a plurality of back end tile servers communicatively coupled with the plurality of front end tile servers, each back end tile server having access to the map tiles, and configured to provide requested map tiles to a corresponding front end tile server.
  2. 5
The system of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein each of the map tiles is associated with an NxN block of map tiles, and each time a map tile is requested, all N 2 tiles in the corresponding NxN block are cached, thereby reducing the need for future disk access associated with those map tiles.
  3. 6
The system of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the number of back end servers is such that each back end server can be used to serve a particular sub-set of the map tiles, and each back end server is capable of caching its corresponding sub-set.
  4. 7
The system of any one of claims 1 to 6 wherein each back end tile server is dedicated to serving a sub-set of the map tiles, and each front end tile server is configured to identify an appropriate back end server to use in satisfying a user request for a map tile.
  5. 8
The system of any one of claims 1 to 7 wherein the map tiles are in a vector-based format.
  6. 9
A method of serving map tiles in response to map requests from a user, in a system comprising a plurality of front end tile servers and a plurality of back end tile servers communicatively coupled with the plurality of front end tile servers, each back end tile server having access to the map tiles, the method comprising:distributing requests for map tiles between the plurality of front end tile servers;providing requested map tiles, by a back end tile server, to a front end tile server;and serving, by said front end tile server, one or more requested map tiles to a user.
  7. 10
A method in accordance with claim 9 comprising identifying, by at least one of the front end tile servers, one or more uni-colored map tiles, and serving, by said at least one front end tile server, the uni-colored map tiles, without having to request those uni-colored map tiles from one of the back end tile servers.
  8. 11
A method in accordance with claim 10, comprising storing the one or more uni-colored map tiles in a memory cache included in the at least one front end tile server.
  9. 13
A method in accordance with any one of claims 9 to 12 comprising associating each of the map tiles with an NxN block of map tiles, and, each time a map tile is requested, caching all N 2 tiles in the corresponding NxN block, thereby reducing the need for future disk access associated with those map tiles.
  10. 14
A method in accordance with any one of claims 9 to 13 wherein the number of back end servers is such that each back end server can be used to serve a particular sub-set of the map tiles, the method comprising caching, by each back end server, its corresponding sub-set.
  11. 15
A method in accordance with any one of claims 9 to 14 comprising dedicating each back end tile server to serving a sub-set of the map tiles, and identifying, by each front end tile server, an appropriate back end server to use in satisfying a user request for a map tile.
  12. 16
A carrier medium carrying computer executable instructions which, when executed by a general purpose computer, cause that computer to become configured as a map tile serving system in accordance with any one of claims 1 to 8, or to become configured to perform the method of any one of claims 9 to 15.
