  1. 1
A handheld device (400; 1500), comprising:inertial sensors including a gyroscope (1502) and an accelerometer (1504), wherein the sensors are adapted to provide data related to the trajectory of a movement of the handheld device;and a processor (1508) coupled to the handheld device, wherein the processor is adapted to: extract (114) the trajectory data using the sensors by combining (1600) angular movement data provided by the gyroscope with linear movement data provided by the accelerometer;receive the trajectory data and convert (116) the trajectory data into a set of values corresponding to a plurality of discrete features;in a training mode (110), store the set of values in a database;and associate (118) a character or a command with the set of values;in a recognition mode (130) compare (138) the converted set of values with sets of values corresponding to the plurality of discrete features stored in the database;select a set of values from the database based on the comparison;and display (140) a character associated with the selected set of values or execute a command associated with the selected set of values, wherein the trajectory data includes data related to rotational and linear movements of the handheld device, wherein the plurality of discrete features comprises the location of a crossing point and/or the number of times within a trajectory in which the trajectory changes direction.
  2. 10
A method for gesture recognition comprising:obtaining (114) data related to the trajectory of a movement of a handheld device (1500) by combining angular movement data provided by a gyroscope (1502) with linear movement data provided by an accelerometer;converting (116) the trajectory data into values corresponding to a plurality of discrete features;in a training mode (110), storing the set of values in a database, and associating (118) a character or a command with the set of values;and in a recognition mode (130), comparing (138) the converted set of values with sets of values corresponding to the plurality of discrete features stored in the database;selecting a set of values from the database based on the comparison;and displaying (140) a character or executing a command associated with the selected set of values, wherein the trajectory data is related to rotational and linear movements of the handheld device and wherein the plurality of discrete features comprises the location of a crossing point and/or the number of times within a trajectory in which the trajectory changes direction.
