Filtered cigarette possessing tipping material

Abstract

A filtered cigarette (174) comprises a smokable rod (186) and a filter element (200), the smokable rod (186) and filter element (200) being secured to one another by a first tipping material (208) that circumscribes both th entire length of the filter element (200) and an adjacent region of the smokable rod (186), the filtered cigarette (174) further comprising a second tipping material (250) overlying at least a portion of the first tipping material (208), wherein the second tipping material (250) comprises a first region (555) proximal to the smokable rod (186), a second region (550) remote from the smokable rod (186), and a perforated region (545) therebetween, wherein either (i) the second region (550) is securely affixed to the first tipping material (208) and the first region (555) is movable by sliding engagement with the filter element (200) upon breaking of the perforated region (545), the first region (555) of the second tipping material (250) being formed of a non-combustible material or including a flavoring or aromatic agent adapted to alter the sensory characteristics of the cigarette before, during, or after smoking; or (ii) the first region (555) is securely affixed to the first tipping material (208) and the second region (550) is movable by sliding engagement with the filter element (200) upon breaking of the perforated region (545) and can extend beyond the mouth end terminus of the filter element (200).

12 claims: 10 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A filtered cigarette (174) comprising a smokable rod (186) and a filter element (200) having a mouth end terminus, the smokable rod (186) and filter element (200) being secured to one another by a first tipping material (208) that circumscribes the filter element (200) along its longitudinal periphery and the smokable rod (186) along a portion of its longitudinal periphery in a region thereof adjacent to the filter element (200), the filtered cigarette (174) further comprising a second tipping material (250) overlying at least a portion of the first tipping material (208), wherein the second tipping material (250) comprises a first region (555) proximal to the smokable rod (186), a second region (550) remote from the smokable rod (186), and a perforated region (545) therebetween, wherein either:(i) the second region (550) is securely affixed to the first tipping material (208) and the first region (555) is movable by sliding engagement with the filter element (200) upon breaking of the perforated region (545), the first region (555) of the second tipping material (250) being formed of a non-combustible material or including a flavoring or aromatic agent adapted to alter the sensory characteristics of the cigarette before, during, or after smoking;or (ii) the first region (555) is securely affixed to the first tipping material (208) and the second region (550) is movable by sliding engagement with the filter element (200) upon breaking of the perforated region (545) and can extend beyond the mouth end terminus of the filter element (200).
  2. 2
The cigarette of Claim 1, wherein the filter element (200) is circumscribed by a plug wrap (206) and the smokable rod (186) is circumscribed by a wrapping material (190), and wherein the first tipping material (208) is fixedly secured to an outer surface of the plug wrap (206) and an outer surface of the wrapping material (190).
  3. 3
The cigarette of Claim 1 or 2, wherein an inner face of the first region (555) carries a flavoring agent entrapped by a film-like or encapsulating agent such that movement of the first region (555) along the smokable rod (186) results in release of the flavoring agent.
  4. 4
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein an inner face of the first region (555) carries a plurality of microcapsules comprising a micro-encapsulated flavoring agent such that movement of the first region (555) along the smokable rod (186) results in release of the flavoring agent.
  5. 5
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the first region (555) of the second tipping material (250) is formed of a non-combustible material capable of extinguishing the cigarette upon movement of the first region (555) over a lit end of the cigarette.
  6. 6
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 5, wherein the first region (555) of the second tipping material (250) comprises an aromatic agent capable of masking odor associated with a cigarette butt.
  7. 7
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 6, wherein one or both of the first tipping material (208) and the second tipping material (250) comprise printed indicia.
  8. 8
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 7, wherein the visual appearance or tactile characteristics of the second tipping material (250) differs from that of the first tipping material (208), or wherein the first tipping material (208) exhibits a first aroma or flavor sensation and the second tipping material (250) exhibits a second aroma or flavor sensation different from the first aroma or flavor sensation.
  9. 9
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 8, wherein one of the first and second tipping materials (208;250) extends further along the longitudinal periphery of the smokable rod (186) than the other of the first and second tipping materials (208;250).
  10. 10
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 9, wherein the first tipping material (208) and the second tipping material (250) form a tipping material laminate.
  11. 11
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 9, wherein the first tipping material (208) and the second tipping material (250) are formed from a single piece of tipping material wrapped around the filter element (200).
  12. 12
The cigarette of any one of Claims 1 to 11, wherein the flavoring agent comprises a cooling agent.
