12 claims: 7 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A combination of a cochlear lead (190) and a stylet (400) for inserting a portion of the lead (190) into a cochlea (150), wherein the stylet comprises:a first sensor (700) insertable within a lumen (511) of the lead (190) and sensitive to force applied by a lumen wall to the first sensor (700), and a first actuator (515) adapted to move the lead (190) in response to the force sensed by the first sensor (700), the lead comprises an electrode array (195) which is preformed with a radius of curvature which is tighter than the curvature of the cochlea, and the first actuator comprises a pull wire (515) arranged such that tension in the pull wire straightens the electrode array.
  2. 4
The combination according to any of the above claims, in which the first sensor (700) comprises a fiber optic sensor (1100).
  3. 8
The combination according to any of the above claims, in which the pull wire has a diameter of less than 50 microns.
  4. 9
The combination according to any of the above claims, further comprising a multi-lumen polymer body (510);the actuator (515) being inserted into a first lumen (512) of the multi-lumen polymer body (510) and the first sensor (700) being positioned in the multi-lumen polymer body (510) within a second lumen (511).
  5. 10
The combination according to any of the above claims, in which the stylet (400) is configured to be extracted from the lead (190) after insertion of the lead (190) into the cochlea (150).
  6. 11
The combination according to any of the above claims, in which the stylet (400) has a diameter of less than 0.5 millimeters.
  7. 12
The combination according to any of the above claims, in which the stylet (400) is inserted into a lumen (505) of the cochlear lead (190) and configured to sense contact of the cochlear lead (190) with a cochlear wall during insertion of the cochlear lead (190) into a cochlea (150).
