14 claims: 6 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
An optical pulse source (60), comprising:an optical pump laser (41) operable to generate optical pump pulses at a pump pulse repetition rate Rf;a nonlinear optical element (44);a wavelength tunable optical bandpass filter (63) to filter the supercontinuum pulses at two or more wavelengths, characterised in that: gating means (43) are provided between the pump laser output and the nonlinear optical element, and arranged to selectively control the launch of pump pulses into the nonlinear optical element at a variable, lower repetition rate Rr=Rf/N, where N is a positive integer, to thereby control the repetition rate of optical supercontinuum pulses generated within the nonlinear optical element;and in that the wavelength tunable optical bandpass filter has a transmission spectrum which is selectable to control the spectral profile of each output optical pulse.
  2. 5
Optical pulse source according to any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the nonlinear optical element comprises a microstructured optical fibre.
  3. 6
Optical pulse source according to any of claims 1 to 5 wherein the optical pump laser (41) comprises a mode locked fibre oscillator and wherein the optical supercontinuum pulse source further comprises an optical fibre amplifier configured to receive pump pulses from the modelocked fibre oscillator and operable to amplify the pump pulses, the modelocked fibre oscillator and the amplifier together forming a master oscillator power amplifier, MOPA, and wherein the gating means is provided between the modelocked fibre oscillator and the optical fibre amplifier.
  4. 9
Optical pulse source as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the optical pulse source is operable to generate said optical supercontinuum pulses having wavelength spectra from 400nm to 2000nm at pulse repetition rates variable between 40MHz and less than 100kHz
  5. 10
Pulsed interleaved excitation Forster Resonance Energy Transfer, PIE-FRET, apparatus providing first and second interleaved pulses, the first pulse having a wavelength selected to excite a donor molecule and the second pulse having a different wavelength selected to excite an acceptor molecule, the pulse interleaved excitation apparatus comprising an optical supercontinuum pulse source according to any of claims 1 -9 as an illumination source for providing the first and second pulses having different wavelengths.
  6. 11
A method of producing variable repetition rate, wavelength-varying pulse trains, comprising:providing supercontinuum pulses using an optical supercontinuum pulse source (60) comprising: an optical pump laser (41) operable to generate optical pump pulses at a pump pulse repetition rate Rf;a nonlinear optical element (44);gating means (43) provided between the pump laser output and the nonlinear optical element, and arranged to selectively control the launch of pump pulses into the nonlinear optical element at a variable, lower repetition rate Rr=Rf/N, where N is a positive integer, to thereby control the repetition rate of optical supercontinuum pulses generated within the nonlinear optical element;filtering the supercontinuum pulses at two or more wavelengths using a wavelength tunable optical bandpass filter (63);and controlling the spectral profile of each output optical pulse by selecting the transmission spectrum of the wavelength tunable optical bandpass filter.
