Improved storage backup method using a secure data parser

Abstract

A secure data parser is provided that may be integrated into any suitable system for securely storing and communicating data. The secure data parser parses data and then splits the data into multiple portions that are stored or communicated distinctly. Encryption of the original data, the portions of data, or both may be employed for additional security. The secure data parser may be used to protect data in motion by splitting original data into portions of data that may be communicated using multiple communications paths.

14 claims: 4 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A method for backing up a data set at a storage device, in which a plurality of portions of data from the data set are generated such that each of the portions respectively contains a substantially random distribution of a respective subset of the data set and in which at least two of the portions are stored at different storage locations, characterized in that backing up the data set at the storage device comprises accessing a logical mount point that points to at least two different physical storage devices, and storing the generated plurality of portions at different storage locations comprises storing the generated plurality of portions on the at least two different physical storage devices pointed to by the logical mount point.
  2. 6
A system for backing up a data set at a storage device, in which a processor is configured to generate a plurality of portions of data from the data set such that each of the portions respectively contains a substantially random distribution of a respective subset of the data set and to store at least two of the portions at different storage locations, characterized in that the storage device comprises a logical mount point which points to at least two different physical storage devices, and the generated plurality of portions are stored on the at least two different physical storage devices pointed to by the logical mount point.
  3. 11
A system for restoring a data set, in which a processor is configured to retrieve and recombine a plurality of portions of data from the data set from at least two different storage locations, wherein each of the portions respectively contains a substantially random distribution of a respective subset of the data set, characterized in that the processor retrieves the plurality of portions of data by accessing a logical mount point which points to at least two different physical storage devices, and the at least two different storage locations include at least two different physical storage devices pointed to by the logical mount point.
  4. 14
A method of restoring a data set using any of the systems of claims 11 to 13.
