Optical code recognition apparatus

Abstract

An optical code recognition station (104) comprises a fixed optical code scanning station (110, 138, or 146) and an optical code imager (108, 136, or 144), the optical code imager (108, 136, or 144) being operable in both a hand held and a fixed configuration. In the fixed configuration the optical code imager (108, 136, or 144) is mounted on the fixed optical code scanning station (110, 138, or 146). Communication between the fixed optical code scanning station (110, 138, or 146) and the optical code imager (108, 136, or 144) is wireless and the optical code imager (108, 136, or 144) operates without a wired connection to the fixed optical code scanning station (110, 138, or 146) when in the hand held configuration.

15 claims: 8 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
An optical code scanning station (104) comprising:a fixed optical code scanner (110, 138, or 146);a receiving portion (130, 142, or 168);and the receiving portion (130, 142, or 168) being arranged to receive a detachable imaging scanner (108, 136, 144).
  2. 2
The scanning station of Claim 1, wherein the receiving portion (130, 142, or 168) is arranged to retain the imaging scanner (108, 136, 144) such that an image capture device (114) of the imaging scanner (108, 136, 144) is directed towards a scan volume of the fixed optical code scanner (110, 138, or 146).
  3. 3
The scanning station of Claim 1 or 2, wherein the imaging scanner (108, 136, 144) is arranged to operate wirelessly of the scanning station (104) when detached therefrom.
  4. 4
The scanning station of any preceding Claim, wherein the fixed optical code scanner (110, 138, or 146) comprises:a housing (150);a light source;scanning optics (152) arranged to produce a scan pattern from light emitted by the light source;and a scan window (128 or 129) in the housing (150) arranged to define a scan volume of the scanner (110) into which the scan pattern is projected.
  5. 5
The scanning station of Claim 4, wherein the receiving portion (130 or 142) is formed in an edge of the housing (150) and is recessed into the edge such that only a portion of the imaging scanner (108) projects beyond the level of the scan window (128 or 129), when received therein.
  6. 6
The scanning station of Claim 4 or 5, wherein the receiving portion (130 or 142) is formed in an upper surface of the housing (150) and is arranged to receive the imaging scanner (108 or 136) such that the image capture device (114) is remote from the housing (150).
  7. 7
The scanning station of any of Claims 4 to 6, wherein a longitudinal axis of the imaging scanner (108), when received in the receiving portion (130), is parallel to the direction of travel of an object passing over the scan window (128 or 129).
  8. 8
The scanning station of any of Claims 4 to 7, wherein a longitudinal axis of the imaging scanner (136), when received in the receiving portion (142), is perpendicular to the direction of travel of an object passing over the scan window (128 or 129).
  9. 9
The scanning station of any preceding Claim, wherein the receiving portion (130 or 142) is located in either of two mutually orthogonal fixed optical code scanners.
  10. 10
The scanning station of any preceding Claim, wherein the fixed optical code scanner (110, 138, or 146) comprises a laser scanner.
  11. 11
The scanning station of any preceding Claim, further comprising a wireless transceiver arranged to receive image data from the detachable image scanner (108, 136, or 144).
  12. 12
The scanning station of Claim 11, further comprising a processor arranged to process the image data and further arranged to process data from the fixed optical code scanner (110, 138, or 146).
  13. 13
A detachable imaging scanner (108, 136, or 144) for use with a retail checkout terminal (100) comprising:a window (126);an image capture device (114);and a processor (116);the window (126) defining a field of view from within which light is incident upon the image capture device (114), the image capture device (114) being arranged to capture an image of said field of view, and the processor (116) being arranged to process data corresponding to the captured image.
  14. 14
The imaging scanner of Claim 13 wherein, the imaging scanner (108, 136, or 144) is arranged to be received in a receiving portion (130, 142, or 168) of an optical code scanning station (104).
