Thermal management system and method

Abstract

A thermal management system is provided. The thermal management system includes at least one heat sink including one or more respective fins, wherein the one or more fins include one or more respective cavities. The thermal management system also includes a synthetic jet stack including at least one synthetic jet mounted within each of the respective cavities employing at least one engaging structure to provide a rigid positioning of the synthetic jet stack within the fins, wherein the synthetic jet includes at least one orifice through which a fluid is ejected.

15 claims: 4 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A thermal management system (10) comprising:at least one heat sink (24) comprising one or more respective fins (28), the one or more fins comprising one or more respective cavities (20);and a synthetic jet stack comprising at least one synthetic jet (16) mounted within each of the respective cavities employing at least one engaging structure to provide a rigid positioning of the synthetic jet stack within the fins, wherein the synthetic jet comprises at least one orifice (19) through which a fluid (23) is ejected.
  2. 4
The thermal management system (10) of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the at least one engaging structure comprises a plurality of bumps (62) formed on an outer surface (44) of the synthetic jet (16), the plurality of bumps disposed upon a plurality of respective dimples embedded on the surface (27) of the fins (28).
  3. 10
A method (200) for manufacturing a thermal management system, the method comprising:disposing (202) at least one heat sink (24) comprising one or more respective fins (28), each of the fins comprising one or more respective cavities (20);and mounting (204) a synthetic jet stack comprising at least one synthetic jet (16) within each of the respective cavities, employing at least one engaging structure to provide a rigid positioning of the synthetic jet stack within the fins, wherein the synthetic jet comprises at least one orifice (19) through which a fluid (23) is ejected.
  4. 13
The method (200) of any one of claims 10 to 12, wherein said employing the at least one engaging structure comprises:forming a plurality of bumps (62) on an outer surface (44) of the synthetic jet (16);and disposing the plurality of bumps upon a plurality of respective dimples embedded on the surface (27) of the fins (28).
