  1. 1
A method for protecting encryption keys in a database (140), comprising:receiving a command to create a master key and a password to protect said master key;generating the master key based on the command;receiving a command to create a dual master key and a password to protect said dual master key;generating the dual master key based on the command, wherein the creator of the dual master key is different from the user who created the master key;and encrypting said encryption keys using said master key and said dual master key;wherein encrypting said encryption keys includes: receiving a command to create an encryption key;determining whether the command specifies dual control;in response to the command specifying dual control, encrypting the encryption key using the master key in combination with said dual master key as a composite key to provide dual control and split knowledge;and in response to the command not specifying dual control, encrypting the key with the master key.
  2. 10
A system (100) comprising a database server (130) for protecting encryption keys in a database (140), comprising:means for receiving a command to create a master key and a password to protect said master key;means for generating the master key based on the command;means for receiving a command to create a dual master key and a password to protect said dual master key;means for generating the dual master key based on the command, wherein the creator of the dual master key is different from the user who created the master key;and means for encrypting said encryption keys using said master key and said dual master key, wherein the encrypting means includes: means for receiving a command to create an encryption key;means for determining whether the command specifies dual control;means for, in response to the command specifying dual control, encrypting the encryption key using the master key in combination with said dual master key as a composite key to provide dual control and split knowledge;and means for, in response to the command not specifying dual control, encrypting the key with the master key.
  3. 16
A computer program product having control logic stored therein, said control logic enabling a processor (806) to protect encryption keys in a database (140), said control logic adapted, when executed by the processor, to perform a method comprising:receiving a command to create a master key and a password to protect said master key;generating the master key based on the command;receiving a command to create a dual master key and a password to protect said dual master key;generating the dual master key based on the command, wherein the creator of the dual master key is different from the user who created the master key;and encrypting said encryption keys using said master key and said dual master key, wherein encrypting said encryption keys includes: receiving a command to create an encryption key;determining whether the command specifies dual control;in response to the command specifying dual control, encrypting the encryption key using the master key in combination with said dual master key as a composite key to provide dual control and split knowledge;and in response to the command not specifying dual control, encrypting the key with the master key.
