  1. 1
A disassembly tool (10) for use in joint arthroplasty for disassembly of a first component (22) of a prosthesis (20) and a second component (24) of the prosthesis in which the first component which comprises a proximal body which having a bore formed in it with a tapered wall, and the second component which comprises a distal stem which has an external taper on it which can be received in the bore in the proximal body and engage the tapered wall thereof to connect the first component to the second component, the tool comprising:a first member (12) comprising: (i) a housing (36) whose distal portion is provided with a radially expandable collet (44) which has a cylindrical or tapered inner wall, (ii) a collar (40) mounted on the exterior of the housing, (iii) a sleeve (42) mounted inside the housing and connected to the collar, the first member having a bore (41) extending through it from one end to its opposite other end, a second member (14) which extends through the bore in the first member, with a distal portion (30) protruding from one end of the first member which is adapted to fit within a recess of the second component, the second member having a second member longitudinal axis (16), and a drive mechanism (18) coupled to the second member (14) at the proximal end of the second member, in which the connection between the collar and the sleeve causes the sleeve to move with the collar relative to the housing along the second member longitudinal axis, movement of the collar and the sleeve in a distal direction causing the distal end of the sleeve to be inserted into the collet so that the collet expands radially and exerts a radial force against the first component, and movement of the collar and the sleeve in a proximal direction causing the sleeve to disengage from within the collet to allow the collet to return to its original size, and in which activation of the drive mechanism causes the second member to exert a force against the second component in the direction of the longitudinal axis, in which such exertion of force against the second member further causes the second member to move relative to the first member along the second member longitudinal axis.
  2. 5
A kit for use in hip arthroplasty, comprising:a first component (22) of a prosthesis (20), comprising a proximal body having a bore formed in it with a tapered wall, a second component (24) of a prosthesis, comprising a distal stem having an external taper on it which can be received in the bore in the proximal body and engage the tapered wall thereof to connect the first component to the second component, and a disassembly tool (10) as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4.
