  1. 1
A surgical cutting instrument adapted to be mounted, in use, to a motor assembly including a motor housing and a motor driving a drive mechanism, the cutting instrument comprising:an elongate drive member (24) defining a proximal section and a distal section;a cutting tip (26) secured to the distal section of the drive member;and an electrical connector (32) adapted to establish an electrical pathway to deliver electrical energy, in use, from a source to the cutting tip;characterized by a non-conductive coupling body (28) attached to the proximal section of the drive member, wherein the coupling body defines a distal portion (80) and a proximal portion (82), the distal portion forming a longitudinal passage (84) extending from a distal end (86) and sized to maintain the proximal section (42) of the drive member, and the proximal portion forming a groove (90) along an exterior surface thereof and a tang (92) facilitating coupling to the drive mechanism;and a non-conductive housing (30) apart from the motor assembly housing, the non-conductive housing encompassing the coupling body and the proximal section of the drive member;wherein the non-conductive coupling body and the non-conductive housing electrically isolate the conductive pathway of the cutting tip from the motor assembly when the cutting instrument is, in use, mounted to the motor assembly.
  2. 13
A surgical cutting system comprising:a surgical cutting instrument (20) as defined in any preceding claim;a motor assembly (320) including a motor and a drive mechanism selectively mounted to the non-conductive coupling body such that the drive mechanism is electrically insulated from the electrical pathway, the motor adapted to rotate the drive member;and an evoked potential monitor system (330) having an energy source selectively coupled to the electrical connector for applying a stimulating energy to the cutting tip via the electrical connector and the electrical pathway.
