Method of producing fuel from biomass

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for producing fuel comprising comminuting a lignocellulosic material, irradiating it with a total dose of radiation of between 20 Mrads and 50 Mrads, and converting the irradiated material with an enzyme or micro-organism to produce sugars, which are fermented to produce a fuel.

13 claims: 6 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A method comprising:comminuting a lignocellulosic material selected from the group consisting of grasses, rice hulls, bagasse, jute, hemp, flax, bamboo, sisal, abaca, straw, corn cobs, corn stover, alfalfa, hay, coconut hair, seaweed, algae, and mixtures thereof;irradiating the lignocellulosic material with a total dose of radiation of between 20 MRads and 50 MRads;converting the irradiated material with an enzyme or microorganism to produce sugars;andfermenting the sugars to produce a fuel.
  2. 4
The method of any one of the above claims wherein the lignocellulosic material comprises corn cobs or corn stover.
  3. 5
The method of any one of the above claims wherein irradiating comprises applying radiation to the lignocellulosic material with more than one electron beam device.
  4. 9
The method of any one of the above claims wherein converting comprises contacting the irradiated material with a cellulase in an aqueous medium.
  5. 10
The method of any one of the above claims wherein comminuting the lignocellulosic material comprises subjecting the material to one or more of the following:stone grinding, mechanical ripping or tearing, pin grinding, milling, or air attrition milling.
  6. 12
The method of any one of the above claims wherein the fuel is selected from the group consisting of alcohols, organic acids, hydrocarbons, and mixtures thereof.
