  1. 1
A blood pump system, comprising:a blood pump (10) having an inflow conduit (60) for receiving blood from a left ventricle of a heart and an outflow conduit (70) for returning blood to a circulatory system;and a controller (80) operably connected to said blood pump (10);wherein said inflow conduit (60) comprises a first sensor (65) located to detect an inflow conduit pressure that is substantially the same as left ventricular pressure, wherein said sensor (65) is adapted to send a signal regarding said inflow conduit pressure to said controller (80), wherein said outflow conduit (70) comprises a second sensor (75) located to detect an outflow conduit pressure that is substantially the same as arterial pressure, wherein said sensor (75) is adapted to send a signal regarding said outflow conduit pressure to said controller (80), characterised in that said controller (80) is adapted to send a signal to said blood pump (10) such that the speed of said blood pump (10) is periodically and transiently adjusted to increase said detected inflow conduit pressure relative to said detected outflow pressure to force an aortic valve of the heart to open.
  2. 4
A controller (80) for controlling flow in a closed-loop liquid circulation system having a blood pump (10), the controller comprising:a processor;and a storage device storing instructions that are operable, when executed by the processor, to cause the controller to: repeatedly detect a first pressure in blood via a sensor (65) resent at an inflow conduit (60) of said blood pump (10), wherein said detected first pressure corresponds to a left ventricular pressure;repeatedly detect a second pressure in blood via a sensor (75) present at an outflow conduit (70) of said blood pump (10), wherein said detected second pressure corresponds to an arterial pressure;and periodically and transiently adjust the speed of said blood pump (10) such that said first pressure is increased sufficiently to permit an aortic valve to open.
  3. 7
The controller of any of claims 4 to 6, wherein said periodic and transient blood pump speed adjustment permits washing of an aortic valve sinus.
  4. 8
The controller of any of claims 4 to 7, wherein said instructions are operable to cause the controller (80) to increase the speed of said blood pump (10) such that said first detected pressure is reduced to a previous level.
  5. 9
The controller of any of claims 4 to 8, wherein said instructions are operable to cause said controller (80) to periodically and transiently adjust the speed of said blood pump (10) such that said detected first pressure is increased relative to said detected second pressure.
  6. 10
The controller of any of claims 4 to 9, wherein said instructions are operable to cause said controller (80) to decrease the speed of said blood pump (10) such that said detected first pressure substantially equals said detected second pressure.
  7. 11
The controller of any of claims 4 to 9, wherein said instructions are operable to cause said controller (80) to decrease the speed of said blood pump (10) such that said detected first pressure exceeds said detected second pressure.
  8. 12
The controller of any of claims 4 to 11, wherein said instructions are operable to cause said controller (80) to adjust the speed of said blood pump (10) such that said detected first pressure equals or exceeds said detected second pressure during systole.
  9. 13
The controller of any of claims 4 to 12, wherein said instructions are operable to cause said controller (80) to, at a predetermined intervals, reduce the speed of said blood pump (10) and maintain the reduced speed for a predetermined length of time.
