Active acoustic touch location for electronic devices

Abstract

An electronic device (10) has a display (18), a controller (80), and a pair of haptic transducers (20, 22) connected to the display (18). The controller (80) configures the haptic transducers (20, 22) to momentarily vibrate the display (18). A pair of sensors (20, 22; 24, 26) disposed on the display (18) detects variations caused by the user touch in the vibrations. Based on an analysis of these variations, the controller (80) can determine the location of the user touch on the touch-sensitive display (18).

14 claims: 6 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A method of determining the location of a user touch on a display (18) of an electronic device (10), the method comprising:Vibrating the display (18) on the electronic device (10) responsive to a user touch to cause vibrations of the display (18);detecting variations in the vibrations caused by the user touch;and determining a location of the user touch on the display (18) based on the detected variations.
  2. 6
The method of any one of claims 1-5, wherein detecting the variations in the vibrations caused by the user touch comprises detecting a sound associated with the variations in the vibrations.
  3. 7
The method of any one of claims 1-6, further comprising:measuring a propagation time (t 1 ;t 2 ) of a transient wave at one or more sensors (20, 22) disposed on the display (18);and determining the location of the user touch based on the variations caused by the user touch of the transient wave.
  4. 8
An electronic device comprising:a touch-sensitive display (18);and one or more vibrators (20, 22) to vibrate the display (18) responsive to a user touch to cause vibrations of the display (18);one or more sensors (20, 22;24, 26) to detect variations in the vibrations caused by the user touch;and a processing circuit (80) configured to determine a location of the user touch on the display (18) based on the detected variations.
  5. 11
The device of any one of claims 8-10, comprising first and second haptic transducers (20, 22) disposed on adjacent sides of the display (18), and wherein the first and second transducers (20, 22) vibrate the display (18) at different frequencies.
  6. 14
The device of any one of claims 9-13, wherein detecting the variations in the vibrations caused by the user touch comprises detecting a sound associated with the variations in the vibrations.
