  1. 1
A method for preparing an environmentally-responsive hydrogel for implantation in an animal comprising:a) combining at least one ethylenically unsaturated macromer selected from the group comprising poly(ethylene glycol) di-acrylamide, poly(ethylene glycol) di-acrylate, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylamide, at least one macromer or monomer comprising at least one ionizable functional group which is an acidic group or a basic group and an ethylenically unsaturated moiety, and at least one polymerization initiator in at least one solvent to prepare a hydrogel in the form of an expansible element;b) treating said hydrogel to prepare an environmentally-responsive hydrogel that is responsive at physiological conditions.
  2. 2
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said at least one ionizable functional group comprises a carboxylic acid.
  3. 3
The method according to Claim 2 wherein said treating comprises incubating said hydrogel in an acidic environment to protonate said acidic groups.
  4. 4
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said at least one ionizable functional group comprises an amine.
  5. 5
The method according to Claim 4 wherein said treating comprises incubating said hydrogel in a basic environment to de-protonate said basic group.
  6. 6
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said at least one solvent comprises water, ethyl alcohol, or combinations thereof.
  7. 7
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said at least one macromer or monomer comprising at least one ionizable functional group comprises a vinyl group, an acrylate, a methacrylate, an acrylamide, or combinations thereof.
  8. 8
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said ethylenically unsaturated macromer is at a concentration of 5% to 40% by weight.
  9. 9
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said combining further comprises adding at least one cross-linking agent comprising a compound with a plurality of ethylenically unsaturated moieties.
  10. 10
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said polymerization initiator comprises N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine, ammonium persulfate, azobisisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxides, 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionaminide) dihydrochloride, or combinations thereof.
  11. 11
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said combining further comprises adding a porosigen.
  12. 12
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said ethylenically unsaturated macromer has a molecular weight of 400 grams/mole to 35,000 grams/mole.
  13. 13
The method according to Claim 1 wherein said environmentally-responsive hydrogel is substantially non-resorbable and free of acrylamide.
