  1. 1
A system for operating an electric or hybrid-electric vehicle comprising a computer programmed to:identify a current location of a vehicle (212);access a map within a database (210) and identify a plurality of links therein;pre-screen the plurality of links to identify if any of the plurality of links is within a given bounds of the current location (214) by calculating a distance from the current location to the closest portion of each of the links in the map database;and if one or more possible links are identified (222), then: if the calculated distance is within a given distance to the one identified link, then instead of calculating the distance to the one identified link when determining a subsequent current location, determine whether the current location follows a trajectory of a previously determined map link, and if so, determine that the vehicle has not deviated from the link and determine the current location to correlate to the last link;and upload power data for the vehicle related to the current pass along the identified link into the database (268).
  2. 4
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the computer is programmed to determine that the current location of the vehicle is off-road if no possible link is identified (230).
  3. 5
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the computer is programmed to:determine a number (K) of consecutively identified current locations that have been determined to be off-road (244);and set a next number (M) of subsequently identified current locations to be off-road if K is greater than a threshold value (246), wherein K and M are each integers greater than 1.
  4. 6
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the computer, if one or more possible links are identified (222), is programmed to:acquire historical power data from the database that correspond to the link matched to the current location (258);and control operation of the vehicle based on the acquired historical data (262).
  5. 7
The system of any preceding claim, wherein the computer is programmed to identify the current location (212) of the vehicle via a global positioning system (GPS) sensor.
  6. 8
A method for controlling operation of an electric vehicle or a hybrid vehicle, the method comprising:identifying a current location of a hybrid vehicle (212);accessing a map within a database (210) and identifying a plurality of links therein pre-screening the plurality of links to identify if any of the plurality of links are within a given bounds of the current location (214) by calculating a distance from the current location to the closest portion of each of the links in the map database, and, if one or more possible links are identified (222), then: if the calculated distance, is within a given distance to the one identified link, then instead of calculating the distance to the one identified link when determining a subsequent current location determining whether the current location follows a trajectory of a previously determined map link, and if so, determining that the vehicle has not deviated from the link and determining the current location to correlate to the task link;and uploading power information for the vehicle related to the current pass along the identified link into the database (268).
  7. 11
The method of any of claims 8 to 10, comprising controlling operating parameters of the hybrid vehicle based on historical information stored in the database regarding the link (262).
  8. 12
The method of any of claims 8 to 11, wherein identifying the current location of the hybrid vehicle comprises identifying the current location via a global positioning system (GPS).
  9. 13
A computer readable storage medium having a computer program stored thereon and representing a set of instructions that when executed by a computer causes the computer to carry out a method according to any of claims 8 to 12.
